As if to demonstrate that every silver lining has a cloud, researchers in the US have shown that older men who enjoy frequent sex raise their chances of developing heart problems.
But the same was not seen for older women, who appeared to suffer no ill-effects from a robust sex life, and tended to have lower blood pressure when they found sex highly enjoyable.
Men in their late 50s to mid-80s who indulged in sexual activity once a week or more had twice the risk of heart attack, stroke or other cardiovascular conditions over the next five years, compared with men who went without, the researchers found.
To make matters worse, the men who enjoyed sex the most were more likely to suffer heart conditions than those who were not so bothered.
The findings emerge from one of the first large scale studies into the impact of sex on the health of older people. More than 2,200 people who enrolled in the US National Social Life, Health and Ageing project took part in the study at Michigan State University.
Hui Liu, a sociologist who led the study, said that older men may come off badly because they exhaust themselves more than younger men in an effort to reach an orgasm. She said that would “create more stress on their cardiovascular system in order to achieve climax”.
More good news here...

Yes, I suppose I could agree with you ... but then we'd both be wrong, wouldn't we?

I'm safer every year since 2002
For Christianity, by identifying truth with faith, must teach-and, properly understood, does teach-that any interference with the truth is immoral. A Christian with faith has nothing to fear from the facts

Some things are worth the risk.... (and I know my Swede agrees).

Die happy, or die miserable?Men in their late 50s to mid-80s who indulged in sexual activity once a week or more had twice the risk of heart attack, stroke or other cardiovascular conditions over the next five years, compared with men who went without, the researchers found.
I know my choice.
And I don't understand this part of the statement:
Does that mean that 2 times as many people who have frequent sex get heart attacks than those that don't have frequent sex?had twice the risk

Well, I guess that's one way I'm avoiding the family genetic curse. Not a particularly enjoyable way of avoiding it, though.
Death is Nature's way of telling you to slow down.
Re: Oh damn..
This will probably be the #1 ignored study in history. fwiw, they hazard some guesses as to why this surprising result, but they are missing a key factor and my guess is that they did not control adequately for the overall health of the individual.
Re: Oh damn..
I agree; I also think they have to take into account the use of ED drugs like Viagra. I believe that the manufacturer recommends those who are prescribed Viagra should be screened for heart problems before the prescription is written, but I wonder how often this is done in practice (I know my father received it from his internist without so much as an EKG, let alone a stress test) . I think the same is true for other ED drugs as well. I wouldn't be surprise if this could lead to a lot of the consequences mentioned here.
Re: Oh damn..
It's an old joke, but...
There is more money being spent on breast implants and Viagra today than on Alzheimer's research. This means that by 2040, there should be a large elderly population with perky boobs and huge erections and absolutely no recollection of what to do with them

And then there is this recent study which was mentioned this morning on NPR's weakened edition.

Sorry I couldn't find an NPR link.
Be sure to read (or at least skip) to the last line.
I think I'll continue to take my chances.

It is that last line that refutes the 'research' that began this thread.
Missing is the usual scientific last line--these are only preliminary results and more study is needed. (Translation--send more money).
But I will keep this Italian study in mind. My wife grew some Rosemary in pots last year. This year she took it out of the pots moved it into the ground and it has been flourishing. I have been using the fresh herb, chopped up in salads, and I like it. I guess I could use more.
