My two home teams are in, but they took very different paths to get there...

The Nationals took command of the NL East early, led all the way, and easily won their division...

The Giants on the other hand, had a mondo-bizarro schizophrenic season...

At the All Star Break, they had the best record in MLB, and then they went 30-42, to fritter away the NL West Division lead, and had to rally by winning their last four games at the end of the season just to claw their way into the second wild card playoff spot...

And now they begin by taking on the team that finished with the best record in MLB...

But let's not forget what happened the last time (just two years ago) that the Giants started out as the number 2 wild card team...

OK, I give up. Searched everywhere but where's the "Sport That Matters"? Not a word about Tottenham's triumph over Man City

It's an even numbered year (aka Giants year).

Hey, let's not forget what happened to the Cubs just 108 years ago! ;)

  • Yeah, I'm a south-sider...but at least I've seen the White Sox win the World Series ONCE in my lifetime. (My father was a lifelong Sox fan and he never saw that happen even once in his 69-year life.) I really would like to see the Cubs win it all just once, just to get it over with (and just so I can start booking a nice skiing vacation in Hell this winter...).

Yeah, I have to admit that if you look up the dictionary definition of the word "due" you'll probably see a Cubs logo...

Just curious, LJ — with all financial records, transactions, reporting, monetary transactions, and so on being done electronically or digitally, where do they manage to come up with all the tickertape?  Or are there companies that specialize in the production, sale, and distribution of waste paper?

It was nice to see the Jays finally capture that wild card spot, notwithstanding the tortuous route it took to get there. A shame that had to be overshadowed by the boorish behaviour of some local neanderthals.

Not a neanderthal...

A Pagan...
Most wanted man in Toronto: Police identify alleged beer thrower at Blue Jays game

Image

For the past couple days, Ken Pagan has been the most wanted man in T.O.

Toronto police issued a photo Wednesday afternoon of the man they identified as the beer-can tosser Tuesday at the Blue Jays playoff game at the Rogers Centre.

The photo is of Pagan, whose seat was in the section from where the can was tossed, and — in videos of the incident on social media sites — appears to toss something on to the field.

He spoke with police Wednesday night and made arrangements to turn himself in. Pagan has not yet been charged.

He is an employee of Postmedia — and formerly of Sun Media — an award-winning journalist  and passionate baseball player and fan with an encyclopedic knowledge of the game.

Pagan, who was at the game Tuesday on a night off from work, said he had been advised by his lawyer, Frank Genesee, not to speak about the incident but did suggest the police may have it wrong.

“I was drinking out of a cup,” Pagan told Postmedia, and suggested Twitter photos that show him after the can was tossed clearly indicate he had a cup in his hand. “I’d love to tell you what happened and my story … but I can’t say anything.”

The controversy occurred in the seventh inning of a wild-card playoff game between the Jays and Baltimore Orioles.

Orioles outfielder Hyun Soo Kim caught a deep fly ball just as a beer can flew out of the stands from the 200 Level seats and narrowly missed him.

The incident put a black mark on what was an incredible game, and elicited headlines and outrage not only in Toronto but across North America.

The Toronto Sun issued a $1,000 reward to anyone who could identify the “loon ball,” as he was characterized by Mayor John Tory.

Pagan said he was badly rattled by the “firestorm” and “finger-pointing” that raged following the game.

Gee, one doesn't expect a Canadian to behave this way...

Where did this guy think he was? Philadelphia?

Just thought I would point out that each and every game of this year's MLB post-season — even the games that will be played in Canada — will be held somewhere SOUTH of my hometown, La Crosse Wisconsin (coordinates 43°48′ 48″ N/91°13′ 59″ W).
Rogers Centre (aka "The Skydome"), the home of the Blue Jays, is located at 43°38′ 29″ N/79°23′ 21″ W which places it about ten minutes of latitude (or roughly ten nautical miles/11.5 statute miles) further south of where I am seated now.

NHL playoffs are 7 months or so away. That is the only sport that matters.

These less important sports fill time between hockey seasons. :fu

Ah yes.  Ice hockey.  The sport where they play a six-month, 82-game season in order to eliminate 14 teams out of 30, and then sending the 16 remaining teams, eight from each conference, into a 3-round playoff tournament (best-of-seven conference quarterfinals, best-of-seven conference semi-finals, best-of-seven conference finals) before pairing up the two surviving teams for the actual Stanley Cup best-of-seven playoff — which means the ultimate Cup winner could have possibly had to play an additional 28 games over the course of another two-plus months before getting their chance to skate around with that monstrosity that calls itself a trophy.
