When I saw that red rectangle over Ed's mouth, I just had to click on it to see what nasty thing he said.

Sorry, that was my first impression.

Good job Ed. I doubt I'm here when I'm 80, much less running marathons, especially considering I've never run one yet.

My older son does, but he's not quite 42. He decided he had to get into good shape to keep up with his eight-year-younger wife. So far, she hasn't gotten away. She runs too, but only 13.2s.

Although ol' Ed looks like "death sucking a lemon" I must admire his stamina, and obvious lust for life. Who knows where I'll be at his age -- a mere twelve years from now.

BTW: In my earlier days my circle of drinking buddies made a list on who would be the first to die. Almost everyone said it was going to be me. Forty-five years later only me and two others are still on this side of the sod. Of course, I predicted I'd be the last man standing. C'mon Dave and Joe, let's make it happen.

Life is good.

80 is pretty much the exception,7 billion people ,so few marathoners (remember what happened to the first "marathoner "? I f you like it go for it ,not everyone enjoys pounding the pavement,(some people actually have to work for a living (even oldsters .)
Have to admit the old guy sure has spunk .

I predicted I'd be the last man standing.
I predicted I would be first. Still a possibility as none of the group has passed on yet.
no, I have no plans on claiming that prize. been there, done that, don't plan on trying it again :nana

I watched a Marine Corp Marathon in DC because my son was running in it. That was my first up-close-and personal experience. My son had to explain to me what caused all the pairs of red spots on so many of the runners' jerseys At that time I was also going to a physical therapist regularly for back pain. One of the staff there was a serious marathon runner, less than thirty years old. While doing a marathon at Los Vegas, she had two vertebrate crack from the pounding on the pavement.

Not my idea of fun. If g-d wanted me to run, He would not have given me nine bicycles.

I dont think a lot of people realize the stress they are placing on their spines .Some people can take it ,others cannot.A bicycle is a reasonable alternative ,one of my friends had to give up running because of joint problems ,He pretty much seamlessly moved into bike riding ,some of the real good "bikers " are amazing on the steep hills .(I found out there was little shame in pushing the bicycle )

I used to say, in all my bicycling experience I never met a hill... I couldn't walk up.

god invented motors/engines for a reason.
One of those reasons is so oldr_n_wsr doesn't have to walk or pedal up a hill.

Thanks be to the Lord, who giveth all intelligence. Even tiny electric motors to be placed inside the bicycle frame so world class professional road racers would not need to walk up the hill.

Is it racist to refer to this technique, walking beside the bicycle and pushing it up the hill, as 'Chinese low gear'? I always thought it was a tribute to the way my brother cyclists solved WWII and Viet Nam war logistics problems.

I was an avid walker and cyclist...

I often walked miles home from work or to friends houses or following stream systems fishing...

I was tall long legged and slender..., made for walking..., I loved it, especially in wild areas...

now walking aggravates my sciatica terribly.

I miss long walks.

cycling does not aggravate my sciatica, but I can t ride hard anymore. still, I enjoy easy rides...

no hills around here....

on the bright side, if anyone cares, I have begun seeing doctors again, since it seems that I m going to live...

I got fitted for a hardshell, custom made back brace yesterday!!!! hip hip hooray!!!!

I ve wanted one for twenty years!!!!

I ve gone to physical therapy and have gotten my neck a bit straighter and less painful.

I can turn my head left , a bit now, and I can lift my head to look skyward!!!

I don t have headaches every morning either!!!! (just some mornings)

I saw the top neck guy a few days ago and he is not recommending surgery, but is gonna hook me up with x ray injections again!!! (he prescribed the lumbar brace too)

I go see the pulmonary guys in a couple of weeks too!!!

the stump of my lung ripped out of my chest muscle when I was sick with the methadone withdrawal two years ago....

never again. I don t mind a percoset here and there when I have chores to do, but I ll never become physically dependent on opiates again. especially methadone.

it helped me tremendously to work a couple more years, but it wasn t worth it in the long run...

well, it helped me repay my debts, so I guess it was a mixed bag....

anyway, back under holly s jeep... :(

I ve replaced the exhaust and all tie rod ends in the last week, but there is one more issue that I have to address... a shaking that is intermittent and seems very dangerous.

maybe a universal, I don t fucking know, but I have to figure it out and fix it.

she has been very patient, but she needs her wheels..., and I m tired of being a chauffer.

anyway, thanks for listening!!!

"life is good"!!!! :)

(there khobar, now you have waaaay too much info!!!! )

Even a chronic malcontent like yourself deserves the healthiest life possible. It's very easy to understand why you feel the way you do. Old age... it ain't for sissies.

I pulled a muscle in my neck/back drying off after my shower this morning. Now I can't turn my head without a sharp biting pain in the middle of my back. :arg

Many years ago I spent some of my employers money on a class about avoiding back injuries on the job. I had several interesting takeaways
from that week. I hope some are obsolete now--like data from Western Europe (where much better records were kept on all work related injuries) that back injuries were highly individual and impossible to 'profile' any particular activity as more likely than others to produce back injury. Office workers sitting most of the time were just as likely to hurt their back as guys lifting stuff in a warehouse.

The most common situation for producing bad lower back pain in America was sneezing while leaning over the bathroom sink shaving.

So you have my sympathy Oldr

yeah, my back has gone out numerous times in the shower when I coughed or sneezed ....

I think it has to do with the slope of the floor and that your muscles have loosened up in the hot water.

I brace myself before I cough in the shower.

oldr, on the bright side, maybe you can get some neck massages out of the deal?

couldn t hurt....
