Professor Sally Davies can get stuffed.

The baby boomer generation, now in their 50s to 70s, should stop thinking about putting their feet up when they retire – and maybe not retire at all for the sake of their health, according to the government’s chief medical officer.
Professor Sally Davies, in her latest annual report on the health of the nation, to be published on Tuesday, is expected to say that people of retirement age might do well to stay in work if they can, or else get involved in community and voluntary activities that will keep both mind and body in better condition than sitting in a fireside chair.
“People are living longer than ever and so retirement presents a real opportunity for baby boomers to be more active than ever before. For many people it is a chance to take on new challenges, it is certainly not the start of a slower pace of life it once was,” said Davies.
“Staying in work, volunteering or joining a community group can make sure people stay physically and mentally active for longer. The health benefits of this should not be underestimated.”
Some 42% of 50-64 year-olds have at least one health condition and 24% have more than one. Staying active through appropriate work – heavy physical work such as building may not be advisable – or volunteering will help. Social engagement is also very important for mental health.

I try to say active by doing volunteer work.
Returning to the workforce and swallowing bucketfuls of sh-t is not my idea of retirement.
It's quite pleasant not to fight the hellish traffic (many times worse now) and amble on to "work" around 10am.

I've no intention of becoming sedate when I retire, (in 14 months time.)
I'm going to get back into paragliding, I'll buy new rock boots*, and continue my quest to visit as many antiquities as I can.
My camera will get a daily airing on my dog walks, and my dogs will be route marched up as many UK peaks as they can handle.
We're buying a campervan for travel, in the UK and Europe.
Apart from that I want to attend as many cricket matches, Michelin starred restaurants, good old fashioned British pubs, and Early music concerts as I can fit in.
It's the idea that I will work one day beyond the first practical day I can stop which is an anathema to me.
*I've 8 crags within walking distance of my house but may just go bouldering as I'm getting soft in my old age.

Well, when your work life has been a retirement, there's no where to go but up!

I would retire if I could afford it. For the most part, I like my job; the customers (most of 'em) are nice, the owner of the shop is a good guy, the commute is 15 minute of nearly empty country roads. Still, I'd rather be gardening, or hiking, or cooking, or sewing. The plan for the new year is to juggle the $$ to see if I can cut back to 4 days a week.

I just want to get out in the country and get a good garden going , have some chickens for eggs and rabbits for meat, and god willing get a couple of deer out of the yard every year.... if I get the place it is lousy with deer....
kinda half assed homesteading.
I m either sick or my back is out half of the time but I can still get things done in between.
maybe build some stuff and try to sell it.
I m trying to get a place with five acres about a mile from here, but not sure if I can pull it off.
I ll have to live with power transmission lines over part of the property, but oh well.....

I find that rather interesting.... wesw has been tooting his horn about the advantages of a Trump presidency like Joshua trumpeting at the battle of Jericho, yet now that Trump has been elected here he is declaring his intention to go back to nature and try to live off the land by raising crops and poaching deer instead of waiting around for all the good things to come flowing out of The Donald's avowed intention to "Make America Great Again".

Like all of wes's fantasies, it doesn't really have any reality behind it.
The man's a twat.

dishonest as usual/
poaching? who mentioned poaching?
are they the kings deer?
are you going to slaughter all of my Scottish deerhounds and irish wolfhounds because the common man doesn t deserve them?
I haven t hunted for 25 yrs or so, but I always hunted legally when I did.
I did try to catch one illegal rockfish a year, back in the day, just as an F you to "the man", but I had my reasons for that.
like I said, this place is lousy with deer, they practically beg you to slay them....

you know, saying that I claimed to be planning to poach deer was just an out an out lie.
I wish that someone would quote this post just so that the multitudes who have me on ignore would know that I didn t say that.
saying that I want a "good garden" is not the same as saying that I was gonna "grow crops" either.
bullshit bill....
....there you earned a new moniker, bullshit bill.

You call this "no intention of being sedate"?
