We went a couple of years ago for our anniversary (long delayed honeymoon) and had a blast. We stayed at the Tower Hotel overlooking the falls, which we liked because it is smaller and funkier than the chain giants. Also got a very good rate there. Definitely have dinner at the Spinning Restaurant of Death atop the Skylon Tower. Do everything falls-related: the boat trip, Behind the Falls tour, the goofy falls "experience"/movie-ride, eat at the "nice" restaurant at the falls. Go to the Botanical Gardens up the road a bit. Take the cable car over the Niagara River whirlpool. Stop at various points along the river to check out the overlooks. Go to Niagara on the Lake and poke around for an afternoon. Don't miss Fort George, which is worth a whole day in itself -- the reenactors are terrific, especially the period military band. If you like kitsch, Niagara Falls has it in spades (the Flying Saucer diner is a standout). There's a casino and a section of town that's all arcades and a Ripley's, if you like that kind of thing (it's not really our speed). Be prepared to do a lot of walking, because you'll want to.

Stay on the Canadian side (I assume you have a passport). And do the Maid of the Mist. And leave time for a side trip to Buffalo for the Albright Knox Art Gallery. Actually this time of year the park on the US side by the Hard Rock Cafe is nice - trees glitter in the frozen mist and the chickadees are tame. Also US side is the Tesla Museum - was interesting 10 years ago - I assume it is still operational but the website is out of date so maybe it isn't.

(Qualifications to comment - 20 years in Buffalo.)

Bring a barrel with you in case you run out of things to do.

I like all of Sue's recommendations, but think about staying in the Niagara-on-the-Lake area and driving to the Falls for day trips. Lots of great B&Bs, you can take in a play at the Shaw Festival, and you check out some winery tours in the area or a short drive to others in the Niagara Peninsula.

If you have any discretion at all, save a visit to the falls themselves for a really clear, sunny day, because any hint of overcast and the falls mist up enough that's it's hard to make much out.

Agree with Scooter about staying in Niagara on the Lake (and of course Toronto is a world class city only a bit more than an hour away). Depending on when you go the Butterfly Conservatory is worth a trip but they are hibernating (??? - not sure if that is the right word) at the moment and it opens up again mid-February.

We found there was no shortage of things to do, whether in town or elsewhere on the peninsula. We went in August and the weather was spectacular; even the one day we had some rain was not so bad -- you can always go shopping because your Yankee dollars go a bit further in the Great White North (at least ours did).

FYI: You gotta pay Photobucket if you want to share photos now; they might show up for you but not for us. :(

I agree with staying on the Canadian side, but leave time to go to the cave f the winds on the US side. When I was there it was a short walk across the rainbow bridge, but it is interesting to be that close to the falls on an open deck--the roce of the winds drives home how powerful they are.

Well, since Photo The Bucket has apparently caught up with me, and their demanded rate is monstrous, can anyone recommend a free (or nearly so) photo-hosting site that allows third-party embeds?

In the interim, I think you can still follow this link if you want to see some of my pix from Canadastan. Let me know if that works.

I used Imgur to post the Daniel Craig / Her Maj pic in the 'What a waste' thread in Laffs. Seems to work just as Photobucket used to.
