Sugar is <<refined>> from beets. The refining process takes the nasty out of it, like gutting a fish.

Its the skatole that makes it smell bad. People who like beets must either have a damaged sense of smell or liken the smell of excrement to food. (shudder)

sauerkraut.

yuck. I once made a bad impression on a girl s parents when they served kraut and sausage to me at our first meeting.

I tried, but gagging as you choke down a family s favorite is not exactly endearing.....

I m a little tight now so don t take me seriously..., as if....

I just gave away about 18 jimmy crabs.

I came home and cooked the ones we caught today, about 4 30, and I just gave them to my neighbor. he just got out of the can, and his PO is a dick, so they were happy.

I was too, I didn t have to pick anymore crabs. I picked the ones I caught yesterday, and made crabby patties.

I even gave my dog, cocoa puff a crabcake.

she went with me yesterday, and my better half went today. my daughter and her new BF, bowed out..., two days in a row,,,,,,. god help us all....

I ll tell you about a good crabcake later, and get guin to vouch. for now I m done. thanks for listening....

In the US 55% of sugar comes from beets; there was a sugar beet factory in one of the small Montana towns where I lived (Chinook) and while it had long since closed the local high school still bore the reference and I learned a lot about sugar beets.

I think beets are gross; I really like sauerkraut though - my father was German and bratwurst w/sauerkraut was one of our weekly dinners so I learned to like it early. It’s very good for the gut biome, as are any fermented foods.

the Koreans are better at preparing sauerkraut, it's called kimchi.

Vas ist das?!?!

Seriously, they’re two different culinary experiences altogether, and both have a place. I prefer sauerkraut as a dressing to corned beef, sausages, bratwurst, scrambled eggs even - it’s not as busy body as kimchi, which has other veggies in the mix - and often a nasty fishy flavor.

You must have eaten the "wrong" Kimchi.

There is NO fish in Kimchi, at least the kind my ex used to prepare.

There are however different Kimchis for different seasons of the year.

I’ve never seen a recipe for kimchi that didn’t include either fish sauce or shrimp brine. That’s one of the reasons I don’t care for it as much as sauerkraut. I’m sure your ex had a lovely recipe - can you get it?

Skatole is also found in many essential oils and is used as a perfume ingredient. In high concentrations it smells foul - not unlike ambergris in that regard.

I believe you're probably right about the fish sauce and the shrimp brine.

As far as contacting my ex, we've been divorced for 17 years and are not on speaking terms.

Anyway, bon apatite! :ok

....lord they don t come easy.....

well, I became over confident in my crab handling yesterday.

my middle finger is well and truly mangled......

I d show you but I ll save it for the politics section....

I kept giving people crabs, and people kept giving me beers, and I just started grabbing the crabs without due care...

I had to rip an 8 inch Jimmy crab off my finger, with a couple of other nips here and there.

I have a steel meat cutters glove, but did I bother to use it?

nope.

first time I ve gotten bitten all year.....

you do know that there of tons of bluecrab up your way?

not too many people fish them, but they are there, I ve seen them.

I thought about getting a shellfish license when I lived in Plymouth, but never did.

apparently, you could send off for one and wait 3 months...., or you could ride to the main office, in boston, and pick it up the same day.

I m sure that they taste just as good up there.

Water is too cold on this side of the Cape. I’ve never seen them here and if they were here, the locals would be fishing them. We did have great local mussels and oysters last night though.
