Recommendations for Quebec City?

Heading there later in the week, my first trip, and a much needed respite/time away.

Also, I hear the Canadians are sticklers on speed limits. That’s a bummer, as I’m driving, and I was hoping to put the new car through its paces. Ok, I just want to drive fast on the open highway.

The speeding laws are much more stringent. As a rule I tend to keep it within 10 kph of the speed limit and enjoy the scenery people are far more relaxed there anyway (tho Toronto is another story)

Seriously though, having lived in Buffalo for years I have spent many happy hours on the QEW on the way up to Toronto. Canadian friends would warn me that the cops were not above filling their quotas with easy marks with foreign (US) plates. I never got a ticket but I did try to stay inside the limits.

I suppose the good thing is it’s the beginning of the month, when quotas aren’t so pressing.

I drove up there from Maine for a weekend once - it was delightful. I stayed at the loveliest little hotel with a cafe on the first floor - I expect you already have accommodations so I won’t go looking up the name of the place unless you don’t.

Walking around the old city and along the waterfront with all the artists and musicians and such was a lovely way to spend several hours, but hands down the best thing we did and which has stayed with me always was a visit to Grosse Isle, Canada’s Ellis Island. It’s a lovely island and a nice little boat ride to get there, but also a sacred place where thousands of Irish immigrants fleeing the great famine were quarantined and a great many died of typhus and are buried there. It’s a national monument, with many of the original buildings preserved and memorials to the 5000 Irish buried there. The drive to Quebec City is simply gorgeous; I went in fall so the leaves were turning which was breathtaking, but I’m sure it’s just as gorgeous in full summer. I hope you enjoy your visit there as much as I did!
