Fire down below

Post by Gob »

The ongoing bushfires in eastern Australia have killed six people and destroyed more than 680 homes in New South Wales.

The scale of the area burned by the fires is immense, with at least 2.2m hectares burned or currently burning in NSW and Queensland.

Previously, we showed how quickly individual fires could spread by animating hotspot data, but we have since had many requests to show the overall scale of the fires.

While there is data available for burned areas generated from satellite imagery, it is not yet available for the current fires.

Instead, we have constructed a simple polygon that matches the area of each fire or fires selected, with the ability to overlay it on different capital cities for scale.

This is so sad. It’s my understanding that the current Australian government is in the climate change denial camp, too.

LOL!! Good old Asaperger's boy, full of hate and bile, but no real sense or intelligence.

So, should Australia stop exporting coal to China? Then maybe the third greatest coal exporter, the USA, could step in to fill the gap?

Your expertise on whores, based on your long experience of using them, I cannot fault.

Australia Experiences Hottest Day on Record

December 18, 2019 at 10:50 PM EST
By The Associated Press

SYDNEY (AP) — Australia experienced its hottest day on record and temperatures are expected to soar even higher as heatwave conditions embrace most of the country.

The Australian Bureau of Meteorology said the average temperature across the country of 40.9 degrees Celsius (105 Fahrenheit) Tuesday beat the record of 40.3 Celsius (104 Fahrenheit) from Jan. 7, 2013.

“This hot air mass is so extensive, the preliminary figures show that yesterday was the hottest day on record in Australia, beating out the previous record from 2013 and this heat will only intensify,” bureau meteorologist Diana Eadie said in a video statement on Wednesday.

The weather bureau said temperatures in southern and central Australia on Thursday may reach between 8 and 16 degrees higher than normal.

On Wednesday temperatures soared to 47.7 Celsius (118 Fahrenheit) in Birdsville, Queensland, 46.9 Celsius (116 Fahrenheit) in Mandora, Western Australia and similar levels in southern and central Australia.

The highest temperature reliably recorded in any location in Australia was 50.7 Celsius (123 Fahrenheit) in January 1960, at Oodnadatta, a desert settlement in outback South Australia .

High temperatures and strong winds are also fanning bushfires around Australia, including more than 100 in New South Wales state where heat and smoke have caused an increase in hospital admissions.

Cooler conditions are forecast on Friday.

OK, wesw, just what the everlasting fuck does that have to do with the topic of this thread?

But I suppose that would be like asking the leopard to change his spots.

Tasmania was once described by Dame Edna Everage as "the bushy little triangle on the soft underbelly of Australia."

I thought he died, but Wiki tells me otherwise. Ironically, he had a very divisive dust up regarding transgender people some time ago. Who knew?

He's now 86 so my guess he's just biding time, shuffling around the house in moo-moos and purple wigs.

More than a quarter of a million people have signed a petition seeking to cancel New Year's Eve fireworks in Sydney, but they will go ahead regardless.

Image

The petition, started six weeks ago, calls for the city's famous firework display to be scrapped, with the funding redirected to NSW drought and bushfire relief.

It had by Saturday evening garnered almost 261,000 online signatures.

In response to the petition, Sydney lord mayor Clover Moore on December 10 said the fireworks were planned 15 months in advance and couldn't be canned.

She said the display generates $130 million for the NSW economy.

The City of Sydney celebrations - expected to attract one million people to the harbour foreshore - will top last year's Harbour Bridge display with 1100 additional firework effects lighting up the arches.

More than 100,000 pyrotechnic effects will feature in the celebrations and letters spelling out Sydney will fall from the bridge as midnight nears.

Authorities, meanwhile, have urged Sydney revellers to plan ahead and act responsibly on December 31 amid forecast hot weather.

Inspired by Edna Everage, this is Pieter-Dirk Uys, a brave man in the struggle against apartheid through his stage characterizations of SA politicians in the 80s and on, especially in the words of his alter-ego, Tannie Evita Bezuidenhout. We saw his noon-1pm stage show in Darling, Western Cape, yesterday and it was a brilliant hour of comedy, satire and wit targeting just about everybody. His impersonation of P W Botha impersonating Jacob Zuma was hilarious.

(CNN)Thousands of people are trapped on a beach in southeast Australia after fleeing their homes, as strong winds brought wildfires and smoke so thick that the morning sky turned dark.

On Tuesday, about 4,000 residents and visitors were forced to leave their homes and vacation accommodation in Mallacoota, in the state of Victoria, authorities said, as wildfires rage across the region.
The town activated its emergency siren warning of the imminent fire threat early in the morning, and residents headed to the seaside, following an evacuation plan previously outlined in community meetings.

The sky in Mallacoota was pitch black even at 10 a.m. on Tuesday.
"There's no way in or out," Mallacoota resident Jason Selmes told CNN after evacuating his home Tuesday morning. As the day wore on, the sky lightened to a bright orange, and the fires began spreading through the town; photos from the ground show homes set aflame and an approaching fire line.

There are three emergency strike teams with the residents at the beach, and emergency services are setting up medical centers and safe evacuation locations, according to state agency Victoria Emergency.

"Mallacoota is currently under attack, there are a number of houses we believe have been lost in and around that community," Country Fire Authority Chief Steve Warrington said. "It is pitch black, it is quite scary in that community, the community right now is under threat but we will hold our line and they will be protected."
Several people chose not to evacuate to the beach and have remained in their homes, he added.

Four people remain unaccounted for in the state of Victoria with a "very real fear for their safety", Premier Daniel Andrews said at a news conference on Tuesday. He did not provide any further information on identities or exact locations.

As of Monday, there were more than 10 fires in the region, including three large ones that have been burning for more than a month, according to Victoria Emergency. Many of the fires were started on Sunday by dry lightning, and rapidly spread due to strong winds and hot, dry weather. Across wider Victoria, 70 new fires started on Monday alone, of which more than 20 are still active.

Residents warned it's 'too late to leave' parts of Australia's Victoria state as fires rage.
On Sunday, after many of the fires began in the larger East Gippsland region, authorities urged residents and vacationers to evacuate, warning that "it is not possible to provide support and aid to all the visitors" in the area.
Emergency warnings remain in place on Tuesday, with authorities urging residents to take shelter indoors. "It is too late to leave," said Victoria Emergency, warning that Mallacoota residents were "in danger ... and need to act immediately to survive."

Located in the far eastern corner of Victoria state, East Gippsland is home to about 80,000 people, who are scattered across remote villages and towns. The region is popular with tourists, who go to see wildlife and hike in the national parks.
Fires have devastated parts of several states, including Victoria, New South Wales and South Australia, for months. More than 900 homes have been destroyed in NSW alone, and that number will likely increase as firefighters struggle to contain the massive fires.

In Batemans Bay, NSW, hundreds of families are also evacuating their homes on Tuesday under an eerie orange sky. "It was like we were in hell," vacationer Zoe Simmons told CNN. "We were all covered in ash."

The death toll has also been rising; a 28-year-old volunteer firefighter died in NSW on Monday after strong winds rolled his truck over. Earlier in December, two other NSW volunteer firefighters died after their vehicle hit a tree during firefighting operations.

State and federal authorities have activated emergency resources and deployed thousands of firefighters since the fire season began in early September. The Australian Defence Force has sent assistance to multiple states, including air force aircraft and army personnel. The United States, Canada, and New Zealand have also sent additional firefighters to help.
Imagine, stuck on a strip of sand between a raging inferno of wildfire and an ocean full of man eaters.

And news today is that an estimated half billion animals have been killed in these fires, included a huge percentage of the koala population.

I wonder if the extreme horror of this fire season will drive the Australian public to demand better climate change policies from their recalcitrant government.

And yes, they should most definitely not cancel the massive fireworks display planned for Wednesday despite the incredibly hot, dry forecast. Must keep on with business as usual!

Organisers of the Sydney display were urged to call off the demonstration and instead donate the money to farmers and the fire service.  A petition calling for the Sydney spectacle to be scrapped — saying it sent the wrong message at a time swathes of the country was suffering from bushfires - has gathered more than 270,000 signatures.

The petition said A$5.8m (£3m; $4m) was reportedly spent on fireworks in Sydney last year.

NSW Deputy Premier John Barilaro was among those calling for Tuesday's display to be cancelled, saying it should be a "very easy decision".  But Sydney's lord mayor Clover Moore said doing so "would have little practical benefit".
~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~
Not to mention that the fireworks would have been purchased and the money already changed hands well in advance of the circulation of the petition.... and I really doubt that pyrotechnic supply firms offer a refund/return policy.

So yeah, go ahead and shoot them off.  The pictures of the 2019 celebration (below)

show most of the display is centered on and around Sydney's iconic Harbor Bridge and Opera House; and it's not like the water below is going to catch fire.

They had to get an exemption to the TOTAL FIRE BAN in order to go ahead with the display; several Australian cities have cancelled. The petition to cancel the display isn’t just about donating money to the firefighters - because yeah, the fireworks are already planned and purchased. Wind carries sparks from over water to over buildings, and cities in hot, dry, windy conditions are quite burnable.

That’s my point. Along with more than a quarter million other knobheads.
