Ministers have today lashed back at the suspension of England cricket star Ollie Robinson for posting racist and sexist tweets nearly a decade ago.
Culture Secretary Oliver Dowden this morning said the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) had gone 'over the top' by suspending the bowler.
Meanwhile Conservative minister Zac Goldsmith shared his disapproval, saying the suspension was 'completely disproportionate and absurd'.
It comes after the tweets - posted when Robinson was a teenager - were dredged up from 2012.
Robinson, who is now 27 and has apologised for his actions, will miss Thursday's second Test against New Zealand at Edgbaston and could face further punishment at the hands of the ECB.
But, in a post on Twitter, Mr Dowden today criticised the decision to suspend Robinson, saying: 'Ollie Robinson’s tweets were offensive and wrong. They are also a decade old and written by a teenager.
'The teenager is now a man and has rightly apologised. The ECB has gone over the top by suspending him and should think again.'
Meanwhile, Mr Goldsmith, the Minister of State for Pacific and the Environment, said: 'He sent stupid tweets as a teenager, and has apologised profusely. What is to gain in trying to ruin his career over this?'
He was joined in his criticism of the decision by fellow Tory, George Freeman.
The Mid-Norfolk MP said on Twitter: 'Seriously? Posting inappropriate tweets when a teenager - for which he’s apologised - is now a disqualifying crime for playing cricket for your country? Seriously??'
It came as last night the England cricket team announced they had suspended Robinson from all international cricket over the tweets, posted between 2012 and 2013.
Robinson apologised last week, while captain Joe Root described his debutant fast bowler’s behaviour as ‘unacceptable’.
Robinson will miss Thursday’s second Test against New Zealand at Edgbaston, with the potential for further punishment as the ECB’s integrity department try to establish whether he had any form of county contract when he posted the messages on social media in 2012 and 2013.
If he did, his case will be heard by the independent Cricket Discipline Commission. If not, the ECB will take charge.
Either way, he can still play for Sussex, with whom he has a separate employment contract.
The news came less than two hours after a drawn first Test at Lord’s, with Root admitting he ‘couldn’t believe it’ when he was told on Wednesday night about the tweets.
‘Ollie’s learned a hard lesson,’ said the England captain.

There we go - demonizing as usual.

Re: Not cricket
He wasn't "caught". Someone* dredged up some tweets from 10 years ago, when he was 18. The tweets themselves are hardly racist or sexist, but in today's fevered wokeness where there can be no greater sin than not being entirely complimentary about someone non-white, he's got pilloried for it.
This could end his career. But still, if he transgressed against today's woke culture, even if 10 years ago, then he cannot have changed, deserves no pity, and has no chance of redemption. That's your caring, sharing, cuddly, woke bunch for you.

Re: Not cricket
Using the n-word and describing Asians as having slitty eyes, nah, absolutely nothing racist about that.
It's not going to end his career if that really was the extent of it, but that's what a review of his social media presence since then will reveal.
His apology came because what he wrote was discovered by others, rather than being voluntarily disclosed by him. How does that not mean that he got caught? He wasn't "caught". Someone* dredged up some tweets from 10 years ago

I think any of us would hate to be judged by our worst words or actions as teenagers, and for myself I can say that I don't go around doing mea culpas for past general asinine behavior. Most of us get to learn from it and do better moving forward.

OK. I didn't se the use of "nigger" in his posts, if he did use that then someone of his generation should be aware that it's well out of order.
Because someone using it maliciously against him is not him "being caught".

Re: Not cricket
WTF?!?!? A bit of team banter and he's strung up. Get a fucking grip ECB!!!The England and Wales Cricket Board has pledged to take “relevant and appropriate action” after more historical tweets from England players emerged.
Just days after the ECB suspended Ollie Robinson over racist and sexist tweets from 2012 and 2013, Jimmy Anderson was then dragged into the row over a deleted a tweet from 2010.
The 38-year-old, tweeting about team-mate Stuart Broad in February 2010, wrote: ‘I saw Broady’s new haircut for the first time today. Not sure about it. Thought he looked like a 15 yr old lesbian!’.
Responding to it, he said: “For me it’s 10-11 years ago, I’ve certainly changed as a person. And I think that’s the difficulty, things do change, you do make mistakes.”
Eoin Morgan and Jos Buttler were also caught up in the social media claims as historical posts were reportedly unearthed.
The ECB issued a statement on Tuesday evening addressing the latest developments. It read: “Since we were alerted to offensive tweets last week, a number of historical social media posts by other individuals have been questioned publicly as well. There is no place for discrimination in our sport, and we are committed to taking relevant and appropriate action where required.
“Given the concerns which have been raised are clearly now broader than a single case, the ECB Board will discuss how we deal with issues over historical social media material in a timely and appropriate manner. Each case will be considered on an individual basis, looking at all the facts. We will assess cases with the ECB Board before making further statements.”
Anderson – who will become England’s most capped Test player at Edgbaston on Thursday when he appears for the 162nd time – admitted the Robinson saga has led to heightened feelings of anxiety in the remainder of the squad.
“I guess we do feel anxious,” he said.
“If there are any tweets from years ago we do have to look at that and again learn from this and try to be better in the future, try to make sure we know it’s unacceptable to use these sorts of phrases and language.
“It is a difficult time. As players we are trying to learn from this. We realise it’s important to try to get educated around these issues, which we continue to do with the ECB and the PCA [Professional Cricketers’ Association]. We had already been doing workshops before this series, basically to improve ourselves as people.
“It doesn’t matter how old you are, you can never know too much. It’s really important we keep doing this, keep buying into this, because it’s hugely important to make our game as inclusive as possible.”

Re: Not cricket
And for our American viewers, Dr. W. G. Grace was the Babe Ruth of cricket.
We had a (very elderly) cricket-mad geography teacher at my school. If you were late for his lesson, and said "I'm sorry I'm late sir, I've been to see the doctor." you were reprimanded. "You have been to see a doctor, boy. The Doctor has been dead these 50 years."
In his younger days, Mr Witham went to Grace's home in Bristol when it was being demolished after his death. Mr Witham swiped The Doctor's front door step - a piece of concrete which must have weighed 150 lbs. It had a second life as the step from the cricket dressing room to the field and for the past 80 years every boy who went out to bat for the First XI paused on the step for a second or two for luck. (They have girls now of the opposite persuasion and I am reliably informed that some of them play cricket. How's that for progress?) I took a look at the school website: it simply says that the doorstep was 'acquired.' I suppose that's quicker to type than 'surreptitiously removed in the dead of night.'

And then there's the old military saying that it is sometimes better to beg forgiveness after the fact than to ask for permission beforehand.

The Breakdown.
Who is offended?
Hairdresser probably didn't see the tweet but if he/she did, probably laughed and blushed with pride at second-hand fame
15-year-olds no idea who Broad and Robinson are; don't give a toss
lesbians well, unless they are age 15, it's not applicable is it? Also they probably don't give a toss but may follow cricket. Good for them!
15-year-old lesbians Did any complain and are they really such dweebs?
self-righteous arseholes BINGO!
Who is offended?
Broad maybe. He probably laughed and smacked Robinson playfully in the head next time they met - it's bloke stuff, not woke stuff. Broad didn't complain‘I saw Broady’s new haircut for the first time today. Not sure about it. Thought he looked like a 15 yr old lesbian!’.

Well put Meade.
Even if, say, 100 people were offended, who really gives a shit?
“People get addicted to feeling offended all the time because it gives them a high; being self-righteous and morally superior feels good.”

So Meade, by your reasoning, the complaint if a 14 or 16 year old lesbian is not applicable? Why?

Wouldn't' it depend on the haircut?
