Anyone here had any experience with dogs with epilepsy?

Poor old Ginger, (aka "Big Dog" or "Spud.") has had several fits, and they have continued today. Took him to the vets, and he's been given meds for epilepsy by the vet, (oh and diazepam to shove up his bum if it gets bad.)

Any, experience or advice to share anyone? Fingers crossed for him please.

Mustering all my best vibes and prayers for Spud and for you. Most of my dog friends use some form of CDB oil supplement with their aging companions. Not sure if that is a situation where that remedy fits. I’ll reach out to one that I know has dealt with this previously and post back when I hear.

So, I asked your question among my dog people. Most of them indicate that idiopathic epilepsy is not usually developed in older dogs and it normally shows up at a younger age (3 to 5 years). Two of the three people that responded said they experienced something similar with their dog and it ended up being a brain tumor causing it. Universally, the response on medication has been that there are many excellent anti seizure medications that dogs tolerate well and they can live high quality long lives on these meds.

Veterinary medications have come a long way and can help in many situations. I don't know about epilepsy, but my own dog had serious heart problems the last few years of her life and it gave her a good quality life for most of that time (indeed, better than some of the older humans I knew with CHD). Give it a chance and hopefully the drug will do its job (and, if not, ask the vet for other options). I wish her the best.

I know very little about epilepsy in dogs other than I had a friend many years who had a dog that had it and it did well with treatment. I don't know what the drugs were. I'm no help, but just wanted to add that I hope for the best for Ginger. He deserves a good life and should continue being in your photographs for many long years to come.

Emma sends Ginger her wishes for a future free of seizures. I had a lab who had seizures and the vet put her on phenobarbital. That was an eon ago. She still had them to her dying day. Fortunately I don’t think she suffered from them and kept her good spirits to the end.
