Pele was one of the few transcendent stars, well known even in this soccer-clueless country, and revered and appreciated on every populated continent. Maybe the greatest ambassador of any sport ever.

Indeed. He was a great talent - took loads of punishment in those more lenient refereeing days. And he dished it out too. A real footballer, not like today's wimps and whiners.
