Time and a half

Post by MajGenl.Meade »

Glad to watch the (highlights of) Iggles crushing Mahomes. . . one trip into the Phil's half in the first 2 quarters??? Really?

BBC etc seem relatively uninterested in the game but tremendously excited by a guy name Ken at half time who introduced a number of other people named something or other, but somehow failed to insult someone else called Rake. Guess that was going to be the highlight but it seems folks were disappointed.

I guess Trump could not take it and walked out at half time. Today I have to go find a T-Shirt and send it to my sister who lives about 3 miles from the stadium on I70 in Kansas City. I really don't care about football, but when it comes to family, you have to rub it in. I was more interested during the game on the back story between the head coaches. They both have time as coaches in KC and Philly.

To me (I am not unbiased) Fox did a second rate job of showing the game on tv and covering the official trophy award after.

There was no "game," it was just a complete rout. (Local sports radio was calling it a curb-stomping.) The Iggles let the Chuffs have a few points to go home with at the end when it really couldn't have mattered any less, which was kind of hilarious.

My youngest was here at home watching with a couple of friends, and with less than 5 minutes left to go I gave them a ride back to school over in West Philly. Usually less than 20 minutes each way. Going there was fine -- roads were actually pretty deserted because everyone was still glued to their tee-vees I guess. I knew people would be out on the streets in town by the time I started to head back, and I had planned an alternate route home to avoid Center City, but I was NOT counting on just how massive the festivities were in EVERY goddam neighborhood! It literally took me every bit of 3 hours to get back to Jersey, trying numerous routes that all lead to complete standstills. The cops had closed off the entire length of Broad Street, as well as access to the cross-town Vine Street expressway, so there was no way to get from the west side to the east side of the city. I was about ready to just say screw it, abandon the car and go to a bar until everyone went home, but then figured out that NO ONE WAS GOING HOME. Eventually I crawled my way down through South Philly and got access to the bridge down by the stadiums -- going half way across the city out of my way. Not even the Pope caused such a ruckus in Philadelphia.

The Eagles won, the Chiefs lost.   And yeah — for the first three quarters it looked like Phillie was the big kid on the playground pushing around the wimpy kid until he finally gives the bully his lunch money.

But now it's Monday morning, and I've still got things to do, bills to pay, and the rest of my life to live.   Whatever happened at the game in New Orleans yesterday or on the streets of Philadelphia during the hoop-la afterwards, ain't none of us gonna ever see a nickle of that prize money or get to touch the Lombardi Trophy — no matter how much beer and chips we consumed during the game, how loud we shout "WE'RE NUMBER ONE!" or how much damage we do in 'celebration'.   Face it, people — other than paying money to watch the game or buy their T-shirts, you didn't do jack shit to 'help' either team.   And that's the name of that tune.

Yes, I suppose I could agree with you ... but then we'd both be wrong, wouldn't we?

Spoken like someone who has never played team sports. If you don't think having 40,000 people cheering VERY LOUDLY for you makes a difference, you should ask some of the players. Energy in the stands (and also as expressed by fans throughout the season) is a huge boost for morale and team cohesion. I didn't hear hardly any cheering for KC last night (and the looks on their faces throughout the game showed it), but I did hear plenty of singing "fly Eagles fly."

Not to mention the economic and social effects of fandom on the city and region. Over the last couple of months, "Go birds" has become the universal salutation around here. And to the extent that the economy is fundamentally driven by consumer spending, football-related activities add a not-insignificant percentage for (at least) 18 weeks out of the year.

I could not care less about NFL nor could I hold it in any greater contempt than I already do - but I'm still glad the Eagles won, on account of all my friends who are Eagles fans.

To be clear, I am not much of a football fan (the sports I really enjoy are baseball and soccer) but I am a relentless booster for my city, and I want everyone living here to be happy and to think it's as wonderful a place to be as I do. And if a football, basketball or (heaven forbid) hockey championship helps, I'm more than okay with that.

ETA:

"Fly Eagles Fly" is an objectively terrible song, even as football fight songs go. But last night it was being sung on just about every corner in town (complete with arm flapping) and everyone was having a very good time.

I really like this one, which I found on Facebook. Are there any other SB adverts that are must see TV?

I thought the Nike ad was pretty good. "You Can't Win, So Win."
