A SHOCKING poster showing an obese boy in Merthyr Tydfil claims feeding burgers to children is a form of abuse.

The People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (Peta) billboard, spotted in the valleys town today, says: “Feeding Kids Meat Is Child Abuse. Fight the Fat. Go Veg.”

The animal rights group, who posted the picture to raise awareness of the town’s obesity problem, has been criticised over the move by local authorities, who have labelled the poster both offensive and inaccurate.

A spokeswoman for Merthyr County Borough Council said: “We offer many healthy living projects and initiatives that aim to address the issue of child obesity, and will continue to do so.

“Unfortunately, the message conveyed in this advert is portrayed as stereotypically offensive and is blatantly inaccurate.

“From a children’s services point of view, this advert is at the very least ill-conceived – and at worst may cause distress to an already vulnerable group of children, young people and their families.

“In short, it is offensive and strays into a subject area that should not be trivialised.”

Peta said it chose to put up the poster, placed at the corner of Yew and Court Street, in Merthyr because of the Welsh valley town’s problem with overweight youngsters.

A spokeswoman for the charity said: “According to the Public Health Observatory for Wales, about one in four children in their reception year in Merthyr Tydfil was classed as either overweight or obese last year.

“Obesity is far more prevalent in meat-eaters than in vegetarians and vegans, and obesity in childhood is strongly linked to obesity and its associated health risks in adulthood.

“Large numbers of British children are now suffering the ills of high-calorie, meat-rich diets.

“Eating meat also means killing animals. Hundreds of millions of land animals and countless fish are killed for their flesh every year in the UK.”

The Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) confirmed it had received two complaints in response to the poster.

But???

Feeding children meat is NOT child abuse.

Feeding children meat also does not mean your child will be overweight.

Are you allowed to have advertising campaigns based on lies?

How times have changed;in Oliver Twist wasn't not feeding poor and orphaned children meat (feeding them above their station) pointed out as a type of abuse heaped upon them?

Only in Oz and you couldn't get away with claiming meat will make you obese.

From the advertising standards on food and drink:
2.1 Advertising or Marketing Communications for Food or Beverage Products shall be truthful and honest, shall not be or be designed to be misleading or deceptive or otherwise contravene Prevailing Community Standards, and shall be communicated in a manner appropriate to the level of understanding of the target audience of the Advertising or Marketing Communication with an accurate presentation of all information including any references to nutritional values or health benefits.

So, PETA is fucking nuts? This is not man-bites-dog. Hell, this isn't even dog-bites-man. This is more like "dog takes dump on porch". That is, annoying but no big deal.

After having read a mountain of information on this subject over the years, I think it would be extremely unwise to eliminate meat (and/or fish) from the diet of any growing child.

Say what you want about "red meat," but soy protein and other beans are a poor substitute for animal protein, especially when the diet must be fueling growth.

And few world-class athletes are vegetarians.

Nor is the consumption of dietary fat any more likely to cause obesity than the same number of calories comprised of lean protein or carbs.

Yes, Idiots are capable of publishing advertising.

Well, if tobacco companies have to put gross pictures of what smoking does to you, this seems pretty harmless. PETA should up the antee and show a cow being skinned and gutted, now that would be an advertisment.
