A MOTHER'S work is never done, so what happens when they get sick or injured?


In an Australian first, insurance is being offered for all the unpaid cooking, cleaning and caring that mothers traditionally do.

And the value of housework has been measured at up to $900 a week.

Those willing to part with more than $2.50 a day will get cover of between $500 and $900 a week if injury prevents them from completing household duties, under the new policy being offered by Million Dollar Woman Living Insurance.

It comes as a study by the firm, a subsidiary of Suncorp, revealed that 1.7 million Australian women have been hurt so badly in the past six months they were unable to do essential housework.

More than a quarter of those injured while doing chores had fallen, and one in five was hurt bumping into something.

Dislocations, sprains and torn muscles or ligaments were the most common injuries, followed by cuts, open wounds or bruising.

And Generations X and Y were more accident-prone than Baby Boomers.

Million Dollar Woman chief Lynette Argent said while policies were offered to cover the main income earner, housewives and husbands should also be compensated for their work.

"This has taken 100 years but the housework that Australian mums perform every day is finally being recognised and valued," Ms Argent said.

Women can receive payouts for up to 13 weeks, or $25,000.

The payout figure is based on how much it would cost to hire someone, such as a cleaner or nanny, to perform the duties.

A woman must be unable to perform domestic duties for at least 14 consecutive days before compensation will be paid, with a doctor's certificate needed.

Smokers will be charged a higher premium.

Kyla Daly, 20, lives with her fiance Tony Bates, stepdaughter Chelsea, 10, and 16-month-old Porsha.

Ms Daly said an insurance policy would help those who did not have family or friends to help out when they were in need.

When I was in my car accident (car hit me from behind, I was pushed into car in front, then car in front pushed into next car) I was sued by the husband of the lady at the front of the crash (last one hit) for loss of "duties" from his wife (or some kind of verbage like that). Meanwhile she was 8 months pregnant, so I doubt she was performing many "wifely duties".

Anyway, it (lawsuit, whatever) all fell back on the guy who hit me first.
