ODD and acupunture...

A 'one-boy wave of terror' who has stolen cars, committed arson and terrorised residents is being given free acupuncture in a bid to stop his behaviour.
Sonny Grainger, 14, is notorious in his Hull, East Yorkshire, neighbourhood for smashing windows, attacking passsers-by with sticks, stones and bottles and was just 12 when he was given an Asbo.
He has already been expelled from three schools.
Now the Hull Youth Justice Service has agreed to pay for a course of 45-minute acupuncture sessions costing around £40 each to try to calm him down.

His mother, Nadine West, 40, says the holistic approach is showing signs of working, but admits he remains a menace to neighbours and passers-by - and has urged police to be tougher on her son.
She said: 'Sonny loves the acupuncture. He is definitely a lot calmer when he walks out after the sessions, but he is still a menace.
'His school agreed to only have him for three days a week but that was not good enough for Sonny.
'He only needs to attend school on a Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. They have been absolutely fantastic. But he won't go to school now. He has not been since February.
'He spends his days hanging out with his friends or playing his computer. I am really worried I will end up getting prosecuted, but he just won't go to school. What more can I do?'
Last November, Sonny breached his Asbo when he was caught with cannabis on the school premises and assaulted another pupil.
His mother believes her family is not being given adequate help and accuses the authorities of biding their time before they throw her son in jail.
She said: 'Giving him another Asbo when this runs out is not the answer. I honestly believe now it is only a matter of time before he is locked up and they will just throw away the key. Sonny has to learn to meet people halfway, but he is just not interested.
'I would love it if the police could make him attend some kind of boot camp. He might stand a chance.'
Nadine previously claimed Sonny's misbehaviour was down to him suffering from a Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD), meaning he does the opposite of what he is told.
He has visited a child psychologist and took tablets in a bid to sedate him in the evenings with little success.
His crime sheet includes stealing cars and motorbikes, starting fires on his estate and even smashing the windows in his own home when his mother tried to tell him off.

Does anyone else here see a kid who needs a father figure, one with some perspective on self discipline?

I reckon sticking pins in him will work. Just get the people whose property he has vandalized to do it.

What a crock! He dosn't need acupuncture that kid needs a tanned arse and needs to be be made aware of consequences. The kids having the life of Reilly...... no school.....never understood that punishment even when I was suspended thought it was fab.
Give the kid a damn good smack, take away his playstation, wii, tv etc. Anything he enjoys. Strip the bastards bedroom until all he has are books and a bed. Ground him for a coupla months, in bed by 7pm every night, stop feeding the fucker junk food. Make the little fucker do chores for the neighbours until he can return to school.

You could try acting like a fucking parent for starters and take responsibility for your child... Being prosecuted might be a good thing for you and the kid.
'I would love it if the police could make him attend some kind of boot camp. He might stand a chance.'
"...and he might get on the telly", she (probably) added. "Oh boo fucking hoo, the state aren't raising my child for me!"

When I was a kid that particular disorder was called acting like a little twat and was treated by careful application of boot to arse (Repeat as necessary. If symptoms persist try alternating boots). Where's
Wille Whitelaw when you need him?
The kid needs another hobby besides collecting ASBOs.

I think he needs to be sewed up into a bag with a weight at one end and dropped into deep water. Of shipped off into the military.
Just as a casual aside, is there any goddamn evidence at all that acupuncture has the slightest effect on behavior?

The acupuncturists I have met all seem to be very nice.

Sounds to me that the kindest thing you could possibly do is shoot him in the head. Some people are just not worth the effort...Sonny Granger sounds like one of them.

FWIW, there is a syndicated columnist who is a child psychologist and his advice - particularly in the case of nasty boys like this one - always seems to make a great deal of sense to me. He is not one to excuse violently anti-social behavior as a "disease" to be treated.
Name: John Rosemond.
Of course, there is no cure for parents who refuse to act like parents.

Couldn't have put it any better myself SMF!
The problem is NO-ONE can be arsed punishing the little fucker, certainly not the mother who says he plays on his computer games all day...
Here's a clue, take the off him and only give it back when he's attending school and not being such a little bastard to everyone around him.
It's not the job of the local authority or the police to bring up a child, it's the parent, single or otherwise.

Sonny Grainger . . . . was just 12 when he was given an Asbo
Until I googled I thought that excused much of his behaviour. I thought such activity is surely restricted to the Navy or perhaps Australia if it was a typo
Who knew?

I had a really good friend who was sent to an acupuncturist for a back problem in the early 80s. After a few months I asked if it was helping him. He said: "no, not at all but I feel great afterwards".

If 'oppositional defiant disorder' is defined as doing exactly the opposite of what one is told to do, why doesn't the mother just tell the kid to be an anti-social spoilt brat and never go to school? That should put things to right lickety-split.
I've just spent the past six months living with a man who pretty much refuses to refuse his children anything, or to discipline them in a meaningful fashion. They're a bit too young now to be on the same path as this kid, but I wouldn't be at all surprised to see it happen in the future - the 7 yr. old boy is already the mouthiest little brat I've known in my life. In this case the biggest problem that I can see is that the two parents were always permissive/indulgent, and now that they're divorced, they're in a race to the bottom to see who can spoil the kids the most. It's sickening, and heartbreaking at the same time, because the children are understandably taking advantage of the situation to the fullest and they are quickly becoming children nobody wants to be around.
Children cannot exercise self-discipline without it being modelled for and expected of them by their primary parents. Too many idiots these days are more interested in being friends with their kids and making their kids happy 24/7. We all pay the price for the kind of adults that are created through this method of 'parenting'.
