Britain stops breeding...

Post by Gob »

Women in Britain are among the most likely in the world to end up without children, an international study has found.

Some 19 per cent arrive at the menopause childless – a figure exceeded by only three countries in Europe.

Experts believe the Barren Britain phenomenon could have arisen because until recently women here were far more likely to pursue careers than those in the rest of Europe, meaning many put off having children until too late.

Some will blame the rise of feminism in the 1970s and 1980s, leaving a generation of women sacrificing family in the name of equality.

But the report shows that when British women do have children, they are likely to have more than those in other countries.

The country with the highest proportion of childless women is Italy.

Despite their reputation as a nation of Latin lovers who frown upon contraception, some 24 per cent end their reproductive years without children.

The extent of Barren Britain is revealed in a study by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development, which represents industrialised nations.

I can't accept the riser of feminism as a reason for a 3% greater case of childless women in the UK as opposed to here.

We had much the same influences.

Some countries social-welfare systems make it easier for women to have both a career and children (whether married or not); Norway and Denmark for example.

The US is not one of those.

We believe in punishing women for their choices because god teaches us to.

Wow! The mind reels at all of the possible interpretations of this data.

I'm not looking at the UK, but at ITALY! A country that prides itself on being passionate, loves big families, and takes pride in the beauty of its women! And one fouth of Italian women don't have children by the time they reach mental-pause.

It's also a CATHOLIC country (where nobody goes to Church, by the way), so one would think would be more influenced by the teachings of the Church - which prohibit artificial birth control and abortion.

Do you suppose they are just not copulating?

Pity.

The other side of that coin Dave is that a holiday in Italy becomes a prospect to relish. All those hot Italian mommas gagging for it as their men are all too busy wearing suits, having their hair styled, crashing Ferrari's and gesticulating madly about it all, to have sex.

Get one now...

I wonder, if you surveyed all of the 18-20-year old women in each of these countries about their life goals in having children whether it would match this? In other words does this outcome reflect what women want in each of these countries or what effect the social structure has on what they can have.

Ads for condoms have been running in mainstream media in Italy since at least the early 1970s - well before other countries were forced out of their prudishness by the AIDS crisis. And abortion has been legal since 1975.
