Ryan Giggs outed by MP as footballer who had alleged affair with reality TV star Imogen Thomas
A politician has defied a British court order by identifying Manchester United's Ryan Giggs as the football star fighting a legal battle to prevent newspapers from publishing allegations of an affair with a reality TV star.
The release of Giggs's name will be seen as a victory for the media over celebrities and their lawyers after an increasingly farcical game of cat-and-mouse that prompted Prime Minister David Cameron to promise a review of the country's privacy laws.
Giggs learnt in April that a newspaper was threatening to expose allegations of an extra-marital affair with Imogen Thomas, a former Big Brother star.
Giggs, who has been married for four years, went straight to the High Court, where Mr Justice Eady granted him an injunction, London's Daily Telegraph reported
The Telegraph said that, under the terms of the order, in which he was referred to only as CTB, the media were banned from revealing his name, age, nationality, playing position or address.
Newspapers and broadcasters were even barred from disclosing the number of titles he had won.
However, they could identify Thomas and details of the affair, which allegedly took place in five-star hotels.
The injunction resulted in an explosion of publicity, intensified by Thomas who protested that she had been "thrown to the lions", the Telegraph reported.
He is the multi-millionaire footballing icon who could afford a 50k gagging order, she is the former reality TV contestant who couldn't. Truly a case of one rule for the rich...
Let's just hope the bugger gets his head together before the European Cup* final on Saturday...
*I don't care that they call it the Champions' League now, it'll always be the European Cup to me!
Why is it that when Miley Cyrus gets naked and licks a hammer it's 'art' and 'edgy' but when I do it I'm 'drunk' and 'banned from the hardware store'?
Saturday's final is all I care about, and his personal life won't in any way tarnish his footballing legacy and nor should it. Quite frankly what footballers opt to do with their dangles is of zero interest to me...
And he's the only half decent player Wales have...
“If you trust in yourself, and believe in your dreams, and follow your star. . . you'll still get beaten by people who spent their time working hard and learning things and weren't so lazy.”
Thomas, 28, from Llanelli, Carmarthenshire, has voiced her distress at finding herself embroiled in one of the highest profile legal wrangles in recent years.
For weeks she has been at the centre of a battle over an injunction taken out to protect the identity of a married footballer with whom she is alleged to have had an affair.
The footballer was named in parliament by an MP as Manchester United star and former Wales captain Ryan Giggs.
Thomas first rose to public attention as a beauty queen when she became Miss Wales in 2003.
But she achieved a wider fame by appearing as a contestant in the seventh series of Channel 4's hit reality show Big Brother, in 2006, in which she lasted three months in the house.
If Giggs doesn't know better than to not screw (with) a Llanelli girl, then on his own head be it.
Mind you, there were none looking like her when I lived there...
She was at the front of the queue when the tits were being given out....
“If you trust in yourself, and believe in your dreams, and follow your star. . . you'll still get beaten by people who spent their time working hard and learning things and weren't so lazy.”
Apparently Ryan Giggs goes down as soon as he gets near the box.
Seems like the Giggs up, Imogen that ?
Just heard former Big Brother contestant Imogen Thomas has got a secret singing career. Apparently she's been doing gigs in Manchester for ages.
Question on mastermind this week:-
John Humphries: Which Manchester United player is known as the Welsh Wizard?
Contestant : I cant say
Humphries: Correct
