Iowa's the hot place to be!

US authorities have warned of a potentially deadly heat-wave passing over the middle of the country.
In swathes of the Mid-west the heat index - how the weather feels - was due to top 38C (100F), officials said.
The heat and humidity made the air in Newton in the US state of Iowa feel 52C (126F), weather reports said.
The US National Weather Service warned of "the most significant heat-wave the region has experienced in at least the last five years."
The "heat dome" of high air pressure, high temperatures and high humidity was expected to expand from the central Mid-western core of the US outward, reaching the eastern US states by mid-week.
"The combination of hot temperatures and high humidity will combine to create a dangerous situation in which heat illnesses are likely," the National Weather Service warned.
Afflicted states included Illinois, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Iowa, Missouri, Kansas, Nebraska, Oklahoma, and South and North Dakota.
Authorities warned residents under the heat dome to drink plenty of fluids, stay in air conditioned spaces, out of the sun and to check on relatives and neighbours.

I was in Newton, IA last summer...yeah, it was warm. This is nothing unusual--the Midwest gets heat waves almost every year.
(And for the record, the answer to the question, "What's in Newton, Iowa?" is "Other than the NASCAR track, not a damned thing.")

As a person who does a lot of things outdoors, I've concluded that you can always dress to be comfortable in the cold, but when it gets uncomfortably hot (and you can't go someplace with A/C), there is not much you can do but stay in the shade. And don't forget the Venturi effect. Try to be somplace that is like a tunnel, so that the air will flow over your body.
I used to run at mid-day in weather like that, but later read a lot of information that convinced me there is NO BENEFIT to high-temperature exercise and it can severely injure or kill you, if over-done.
The worst, as far as I'm concerned are places like Phoeniz and LV, where it can go weeks without cooling off to a temperature below 100F. You gotta be nutz to live in such a climate.

I can't even imagine living in those spots, but Houston and San Antonio have to be the worst and of course the entire state of Florida.
High altitude desert living is the best, I don't even have AC, just an evap cooler.

Its summer. Bound to be hot. Soon enuf it will be winter. bound to be cold. eventually a hurricane may form just in time to place the blame on bush lest we forget his attack on NO.
In the meantime the midwestern skunkfish is thought to be threatened by iceberg melting brought on by SUV exhaust, while no consideration is given to the shit we dump down the drain.

On vacation in June, until hitting Michigan, the COOLEST daytime temps on the trip were in Florida! Cocoa Beach was about 83 degrees and very nice...but Cecil, GA was 95+, Montgomery, AL was about 98, Nashville, TN was about 95, and Indy was about 98. VERY happy to have air conditioning! I don't mind heat, it is the opressive humidity I mind.
Heat doesn't bother Liz...she grew up in Florida and considers 90 and humid a nice day. She did not own an air conditioner until we moved in together.

Me too, which is why I mentioned Florida in the first place.
Heat doesn't bother Liz...she grew up in Florida and considers 90 and humid a nice day. She did not own an air conditioner until we moved in together.
Albuquerque is the same altitude as Denver. June is typically the only month we have a chance of hiting 100 deg, and if we do, the humidity would be about 5%. At which time my evap cooler would put out 40 deg air.

I never mind a dry heat at all; and frankly don't like air conditioning. If I'm out working when/where it's hot, the chill of going into an A/Ced environment is an unpleasant shock.
What I don't like is 'stuffy', which is what a humid atmosphere feels like. Out in the tropics of the pacific, 82ยบ can feel like you're broiling, when the humidity can get over 100%.
