Fans of Britain's famous HP Sauce have aired their outrage over changes to the recipe of the much-loved brown condiment.
For more than 116 years, diners have dedicated themselves to the sauce - a combination of tomatoes, malt vinegar, molasses, dates, tamarind and spices - but an alteration to ingredients at the request of health authorities has seen some snub the flavour enhancer.
Manufacturer Heinz has slashed the product's salt content from the original 2.1 grams per 100 grams to 1.3 grams for the same quantity.
Chef Marco Pierre White, who has a Michelin Star, is among the critics of the revised recipe. White discovered the change while tucking into a pub meal of bangers and mash.
"At first, I thought it was the sausages, but it wasn't," he told London's Daily Telegraph. "It was the HP, which tasted disgusting. It was definitely dodgy. "I had no idea they had changed the recipe. I was brought up on HP Sauce."
Heinz disagreed that the sauce had lost its flavour as a result of the recipe change, instead insisting that the condiment had "benefited" from the company's commitment to "reduce salt in line with health targets".
