My carpool partner is turning 65 soon and I wanted to get her something really *nice*. She is absolutely an amazing woman who is at the center of many people's lives. She provides frequent support for her three grown sons. Takes care of her irascible 92-yr old father. Is in charge of her 85-ish mean and demented auntie's finances and care. And is the devoted spouse of a really skilled woodworker (when you're ready to buy furniture that your great-grandkids will fight over, give him a call).
She is a petite Japanese-American woman with a strong aesthetic sense who likes gardening and has a 1yr-old Australian shepherd dog.

Do you want your gift to be personal, or a lovely generic present?
When people don't know me that well personally, I always enjoy getting a beautifully potted plant in a gorgeously glazed pot.
For those closer to me .... It is usually a far harder task.

Some kind of Koi necklace?
Although she is an American/Japanese woman, the Koi symbolises good fortune or luck they also are associated with perseverance in adversity and strength of purpose. Symbolic in Buddhism to represent courage.

A gardening journal? A gift certificate for massage(s)? (A nice gift for a caretaker.)
What's your budget?
Hen's idea is nice, too.

I hope she likes it as much as I would! No blaming me if she doesn't.
