The animated scan showed more than three areas of the brain were involved at different times, leading millions of men to shake their heads and say 'nah'.

Researchers found that the orgasm starts in the frontal cortex before moving on to the nucleus accumbens and then reaching its peak in the hypothalmus, by which point a normal man should have finished and be well on his way to the lavatory.

Professor Henry Brubaker, of the Institute for Studies, said: "I completely lost track of it half way through. It was like watching a David Lynch film.

"How are we supposed to remember 'nucleus accumbens' never mind asking if her oxytocin has reached its optimum level?"

Stephen Malley, from Guildford, said: "Not that I care in the slightest, but if a woman really wants to have an orgasm with me then it'll have to be a proper, old fashioned one with none of your fancy brain parts that are just there for show."

Bill McKay, from Hatfield said: "I thought they had them in their vaginas? The same way that I have mine in my penis.

"If it can all be kept in the vagina area then I can probably cope with that, but if bits of it are going to be happening in her brain then I'm going to get all confused.

"And then eventually I'll just give up and go and watch television.

To make the animation, researchers monitored a woman's brain as she lay in a functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) scanner and stimulated herself. The research will help scientists to understand how the brain conducts the symphony of activity that leads to sexual climax in a woman.

Perhaps the bonobo's most typical sexual pattern, undocumented in any other primate, is genito-genital rubbing (or GG rubbing) between adult females. One female facing another clings with arms and legs to a partner that, standing on both hands and feet, lifts her off the ground. The two females then rub their genital swellings laterally together, emitting grins and squeals that probably reflect orgasmic experiences. (Laboratory experiments on stump- tailed macaques have demonstrated that women are not the only female primates capable of physiological orgasm.)

Some of the first studies of the SSRIs found that adverse sexual side effects (such as orgasm problems) occur in less than 10% of patients, according to Lawrence Labbate, M.D., Associate Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at the Medical University of South Carolina, Charleston. But, he points out, those studies relied on unprompted reporting -- patients who spoke up during a doctor visit or called their doctor on the phone when they noticed the sexual problems, so the number of people experiencing such problems was underrepresented.

In more recent studies, doctors specifically asked patients about libido or orgasmic difficulties, and found that they are present in nearly half of patients on an SSRI. Labbate reported this finding in the October 1999 issue of Psychiatric Annals.
