An APT: What Is The Funniest Movie You've Ever Seen?

Post by Lord Jim »

For me, the answer is easy; The Out Of Towners the original, with Jack Lemon and Sandy Dennis...It's rather timeless..

I can't watch that movie without doubling over in laughter...

"Life of Brian" is well up there for me, a clichéd choice I know, but it is so funny.

(Funnily enough I was going to start a thread; "When Alzhiemers sets in, which comedy are you looking forward to watching for the "first" time again?" My choice would have been "Fawtly Towers.")

That's a hard call Jim...

"Life of Brian" and "This is Spinal Tap" are right up there but I think "The Party" just about edges it.
Why is it that when Miley Cyrus gets naked and licks a hammer it's 'art' and 'edgy' but when I do it I'm 'drunk' and 'banned from the hardware store'?

Gwen Kellerman: George, now I promised I would call the children this morning. If they don't hear from me, they will be worried.
George Kellerman: Well, right now they're eating a big bowl of Rice Krispies and bananas. Worry about us, will you?
Gwen Kellerman: You haven't thought about them once since we left, have you? About their welfare? About their future if anything should happen to us? Have you thought about our children once since we left home?
George Kellerman: Yes! In between the mugging and the kidnapping! Now, you gonna walk, or we gonna stand here and have a PTA meeting?

Clerks, or anything by Kevin Smith.

I gotta a few ties to this movie; I used to buy his Graphic Novels, before he was big, from a friend of his Dan Vado. My Fireman buddy used to live a block away from the convenience store, where this was shot. ... plus, Jay is a Sharks fan

All his books contained such great dialogue; funny, but made you think too.

Unfortunately, Hoffmann was up against the entire Gandhi machine that year and so Ben Kingsley won Best Actor, otherwise the Oscar belonged to him. And the entire supporting cast - Jessica Lange, Teri Garr, Bill Murray, Dabney Coleman, etc. - was genius.

George Fields: Michael, nobody's gonna do that play.
Michael Dorsey: Why?
George Fields: Because it's a downer, that's why. Because nobody wants to produce a play about a couple that moved back to Love Canal.
Michael Dorsey: But that actually happened!
George Fields: WHO GIVES A SHIT? Nobody wants to pay twenty dollars to watch people living next to chemical waste! They can see that in New Jersey!

No question, hands down: Holy Grail.

Any early Woody Allen. Sleeper was probably the funniest.

I'd certainly have Duck Soup near the top of my list...

I've always considered that to be the best of the Marx Brothers movies, because it focuses so purely on Groucho, Chico and Harpo, without the tedious, gratuitous romantic subplot that was grafted on to so many of their movies so they could toss Gummo and Zeppo some work...

The Princess Bride;

...better than Shrek, probably influenced it, but wasn't surpassed by cartoon pop culture references. The Princess Bride iz timeless, like Shakespeare, in its universal comedic themes, and fast paced timing.

I stumbled on a bit of that on late night cable TV last winter - it was hilarious!

We had a Top 10 Comedies thread a while back, but one movie I forgot to list was The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai. It is just crammed full of jokes -- many of them sight gags just going on somewhere in the frame -- all delivered in straight deadpan. I laughed for years.

Peter Weller is close to the top of the list of deadpan actors...

Don't forget the wonderful Foul Play, with a very young Goldie Hawn and Chevy Chase.

I also love Python's Meaning of Life, and the wonderful A Fish Called Wanda.
