I'm getting into American Football!!
This preconception was not greatly altered by an offer to provide an in-depth analysis of Foxtel’s coverage of the Lingerie Football League — a form of American ‘‘football’’ played on a small, indoor arena by uniformly well-endowed women wearing bikinis fashioned to look somewhat like the remnants of sports uniforms.
For the frenzied, mostly male crowd who take a sporting interest in the fortunes of the San Diego Seduction, Dallas Desire or the Orlando Fantasy, the indoor part is unfortunate. After all, a decent downpour would remove the slim boundary that separates the LFL from mud wrestling.
Even then, only the po-faced, no-this-is-a-real-sport commentary gives the stunned first-time viewer any reason to believe the LFL is anything but a grotesque, exploitative perv-fest that, in a few minutes of girly push and shove, sets back the cause of women’s rights more than an entire season of The Footy Show. Which, inevitably, has made it a big hit and major money spinner.
But if the very existence of LFL is a depressing reminder of where some television executives still believe the charm of women’s sport lies — between the neck and the knee bone — recent events prove we might still live in somewhat enlightened times.
