Why is Judy Garland such a (cliched) icon for the gay crowd?

The one I've never understood is Marilyn Monroe.....

I've heard that for years....

Movie legend Judy Garland has been named the top female gay icon of all time in a new online poll. The late Hollywood star was voted above celebrities including Kylie Minogue and Madonna, who were named second and third respectively, and another film icon, Marilyn Monroe, who came in sixth place.

Rubbish. It's the Ruby Red slippers.

I actually meant Marilyn Munroe.

But Garland's portrayal of Dorothy was certainly a factor; as there is a lot about The Wizard of Oz that can be viewed as a metaphor for gay life.

But I confess, the first time I went to Washington 25 years or so ago, I went to the Smithsonian largely out of a desire to see the ruby slippers.
