I think my brother's battalion has gotten stuff from him.

I have to say I have a hard time getting all that worked up about this one. The smart thing for the MPAA would be to just quietly tell him, "Dude...knock it off."

I don't know, I always have a soft spot for old geezers who say "ah fuck it, I'm doing what I want, screw the system. Life's too short."

It's still theft. If the ends justify the means then the entire system tumbles and becomes based on individual value judgments. Sorry he may be a good-hearted thief but he is still a thief. Why doesn't he spend his time and money and energy convincing the copyright holders to send non- pirated versions of this stuff to the troops on their own. Create a non profit to manage it all and it's not only good and right but tax deductible. Think of the goodwill!

Uh...because he's 92 and he hasn't the time, patience, or skills to go that route? (Just a guess.) At that age I imagine you want to see results NOW, not 10 years from now. I only hope I find as worthwhile a project to devote myself to at that age!

1. He's been doing it for eight years already.
2. It wouldn't take very long to set up the foundation, but yes, it could take more time to get the companies/RIAA to participate.
3. If he did it as a foundation, then he could assure that this work -- which on its merits is a great idea -- would continue after he was no longer around.

Sure Dales, except they all got the last laugh in the Napster litigation, and for every huge millionaire artist who could care less about royalties or residuals, there are thousands who live on that income -- so you're really screwing the little guy the most.

I'm disappointed.
I read the title and expected this thread to be about the surprise casting of Julian Clary as Capt. Jack Sparrow in a gritty Pirates of the Caribbean reboot.

But on the OP, I wonder what the reaction would be if he'd been supporting his local H distributor, cutting it to the max and shipping it to the needy troopers? They just couldn't get by without something illegal being provided free of charge and helping the illegal copying of movies by the dreaded Chinese, my captain. Pirate to some; heroin to others

I have lived in Australia almost all my life and I have never heard anyone (from around my area anyway) use the term "pugwash" for oral sex.

I wouldn't dare use that term around anyone's area

Yeah, I heard stories about the RIAA going after little old ladies who downloaded a few tunes wanting thousands of dollars (when in fact they got zippo) their real motive was to scare the sh-t out of anyone even comptemplating downloading any music via P-t-P networks.......They went after the big fish instead (Napster and Limewire) because that's where the money is.
BMI and ASCAP going after small cafe owners for
even have the radio on playing music
for gawds sakes!
I agree with your point about artists getting reamed out of royalties, but in fact the Corparate attack dogs went after the little guy
(which got my hackles us) at first and then focused their sights on the big fish.
Oh yeah, before Limewire bit the dust.....I downloaded music via their P-t-P network, might I expect a knock at my door or will it just be kicked down?

So Dales, I presume that you think that someone who just shoplifts once in a while should be given a pass in favor of going after the big shoplifting rings?

By the way, contrary to popular belief, there are no ASCAP or BMI licenses due for playing radios or TVs in most small establishments so long as the shows are not taped and rebroadcast or if they are not transfered into other rooms--the radio licenses pay for that. Playing of taped/recorded music is subject to a license fee

Yes, I do.
When kids lift candy bars and sodas apart from organized "boosters" who target high-end retailers stealing thousands of dollars in merchandise.
And, back in the day I recorded hours upon hours on reel-to-reel tape of music from FM radio because as a teen with very limited funds I couldn't buy all that d@mned vinyl. Other kids were doing it too, by the millions. I didn't hear BMI or ASCAP b!tching about it then.
So, sue me!
