How the other half live

A family of former asylum-seekers from Somalia are living in a £2.1million luxury townhouse in one of Britain's most exclusive addresses at a cost to taxpayers of £8,000 a month.

Abdi and Sayruq Nur and their seven children moved into their three-storey property in a fashionable area of London last month because they didn't like the 'poorer' part of the city they were living in.

Mr Nur, 42, an unemployed bus conductor, and his 40-year-old wife, who has never worked, are now living in Kensington despite the fact that they are totally dependent on state benefits.

They live close to celebrities, including artist Lucian Freud, singer Damon Albarn and designer Stella McCartney, and their home is just minutes from the fashionable Kensington Place restaurant which was a favourite haunt of the late Princess Diana.

The family's new home is believed to be one of the most expensive houses ever paid for by housing benefit, which is administered by local councils but funded by the Department for Work and Pensions.

The disclosure that a single family has been paid so much will embarrass Ministers, who last month pledged to rein in Britain's £20billion-a-year housing benefit bill.

Mr Nur said his former five-bedroom home in the Kensal Rise area of Brent, which cost £900 a week in housing benefit, was suitable for the family's needs but he said they had felt compelled to move because they did not like living 'in a very poor area' and were unhappy with the quality of local shops and schools.
I make that out to be about $4300 a month....that's a poor area :?:

A housing allowance that huge would be a scandal in this country...
The £2,000 per week is paid directly to Mr Nur and his family, who then pay their landlord. Property sources say the house was being advertised locally at a cost of £1,050 per week.

The house is owned by Brophy Group Business Ltd, a British Virgin Islands company whose registered address is a post office box in Liechtenstein.
Su-weeeet

So let's say Mr. Nur kicks in an extra 150 pounds a week over the asking price, just so they'll say they're getting 2000 in case anyone should ask...(not likely, apparently)

So in addition to living rent free in a 3 million dollar house, he gets an extra $1200 a week tax free in walking around money, (in addition to whatever benefits he's "entitled" to of course...)
'Soon, all three of our younger children are going to be at primary school and we can't take them all on the bus. Now they are going to a school which is just down the road.'
What, no limo?

I just have one question....

Why the hell does ANYBODY work in that country?

You have to be a damn idiot to work when you can pull off a deal like this....

You have to be any other colour than white to pull that deal off!

Oh it gets better..
A former asylum seeker from Somalia who was given a £2.1million luxury townhouse at the expense of the taxpayer has been accused of leaving rent arrears of £7,000 when he and his family moved out of their previous home.

Abdi Nur, along with his wife and their seven children, moved into the three-storey property in West London last month because he didn’t like the ‘poor’ area of the city they were living in.

His case was labelled ‘an outrage’ by the Prime Minister last week after The Mail on Sunday revealed the public was footing the townhouse’s £8,000 monthly rental bill.

Now, the owner of Mr Nur’s former home in North-West London has claimed the 42-year-old ex-bus conductor owes him £7,000 in rent arrears.

Under the Government’s scheme, housing benefit is funded by the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP). It sends the money to housing authorities, which then pass it on to the claimants, who use the money to pay rent.

Shashi Pindoria, a property tycoon in North London, said Mr Nur had secretly moved his family out of the house in the London borough of Brent shortly before June, after being chased for the outstanding debts.

‘He was supposed to pay me £790 a week but he left without paying around £7,000,’ said Mr Pindoria, 52.

What lunacy...

What possible rationale is there for not paying the rent to the landlords directly?

It seems to me that the only "entitlement" this chap should have coming to him at this point is a one way ticket back to Somalia...

Geez, I need to get on welfare.

My master plan is as follows...

When I gain Australian citizenship I will renounce my British citizenship and burn my British passport. Then, once I've gotten rid of my accent I'll move to the UK as a refugee and live like a king!

Huzzah!

Fine plan Sean, don't forget to make SMF wear a burka though, otherwise you have no chance of pulling it off. :)

I percieve a flaw in Sean's cunning plan...

(Though I didn't realize until now that SMF was his SO.)
