For centuries, the great British loo has been a matter of envy to the rest of the world.

Thanks to the efforts of pioneers like the legendary Thomas Crapper, we have long since led the world in comfort and hygiene.

Now, however, that could be about to change.

For most of us, the squat toilet is nothing more than a staple of horror stories about old-fashioned French service stations or the exploits of adventurous backpackers in far-flung parts of India.

But this basic form of plumbing, also known as a Turkish toilet or Nile pan, could be coming to a shopping centre near you - and all in the name of cultural sensitivity.



From next week, shoppers in Rochdale who push open the cubicle door expecting the reassuring sight of a modern, clean lavatory could instead be faced with little more than a hole in the ground.

Bosses of the Greater Manchester town's Exchange mall have installed two as part of an upgrade costing several thousand pounds after attending a cultural awareness course run by a local Muslim community activist.

A familiar sight in parts of the Middle East, and still sometimes seen in France and Italy, the toilets require users to squat above them, rather than sitting.

With one in ten of Rochdale's population of Pakistani or Bangladeshi origin, centre managers say they have been told some members of the local Asian community prefer them for cultural reasons.

Gob and Sean--why do you care if some private businesses choose to offer toilet facilities a significant portion of its clientele would prefer; no one is forcing you to use them or even to patronize those businesses. Are we really at the point where the type of toilet is a matter of national pride? You really care if people prefer to squat ans shit versus sitting on a seat and shitting? What possible difference does this make to you?

I think Big RR makes a good point here...

If some local government were mandating that these toilets be installed, I'd have big problems with that...

But if the people who own this mall have decided to do it, I imagine they think it's a good business decision, (presumably they're not removing the normal toilets) and I have no problem with it. It's their property, if they want to do this, that's really their business, not mine. As Big RR pointed out, if people are upset by it, they don't have to patronize the shops in that mall; they could even try to organize a boycott, if they chose.

(Personally I very rarely make a number two in public restrooms anyway, so it wouldn't really affect me. The first time I confronted one of these contraptions was in the Philippines. I didn't even recognize it as a toilet. I walked back out and went up to the bartender and told him I must have gone into the wrong room and asked him where bathroom was. He laughed...apparently I wasn't the first westerner to ask this question...and informed me that was the bathroom... I decided I could manage without it till I got back to the hotel.)

My personal opinion is that I find it disturbing that someone or some group moves into a country and decides that their culture should dictate policy to the natives. Oh wait a minute the Europeans have a long history of that. The U.S., Australia,India, to mention a few. About the only place they have not been 100% successful was Ireland. I don't really care if someone wants to squat to shit. Hell, if they want to squat in the corner that's fine with me, just as long as it's not my corner.

Strop, I can only speak for myself, but I'm not trying to defend this decision....

Only the right of a private business to make this decision...(as opposed to a government entity trying to impose it)

If they have made a poor and/or stupid business decision, they will suffer the consequences...

I'm guessing that this mall probably has more than two toilets....

I would bet that even though this decision was made after attending a "cultural awareness course run by a local Muslim community activist" that the reason this decision was made was because those "activists" cleverly sold the owners of the mall on the idea that installing these "excuses-for-a-toilet" would get the 10% (according to the article) of the mall's patrons to shop longer in the mall...

Those activists undoubtedly had a political agenda in mind, but I suspect that re this:

That the owners of the mall knew as much about what sorts of toilets were in Asian/Muslim homes as I know about what sorts of toilets are used on Rigel 7.....

Sean--IMHO, people and/o institutions that choose to implement changes out of a concern for offending fellow human beings is never wrong unless it is mandated/coerced by by the government (and FWIW, I would think calling a pub The Saracen's Head could be as offensive as calling one The Nigger's Head in the US; there may have been a time where names like that were approriate, but it's long gone). However, if the government steps in and mandates it, i am highly suspicious. It is sometimes justified, but must be demonstrated (e.g. if the government chose to madate that all taxis permit guide dogs to ride, I think it would be eminently defensible, even is some drivers would find it offensive, and others might have allergies--licensed taxis must serve the public interest and rules to ensure they do are appropriate).

Rochdale is five minutes from where I live. We have a strong rivalriy with the town... It still irks me that I have a Rochdale dialling code!

I have had over a dozen holidays in Turkey and the middle east. without fail ALL of these countries have installed western style bogs for the tourists in public places. I have had the displeasure of having to use a squat bog in Turkey once, not a lot of fun, can't imagine why anyone would want to use one once they have tried the western variety though.
