That's A Lot Of Cluckers....

Super Bowl XLVII super stats: chicken wings, avocados, and HDTVs

Super Bowl XLVII will be watched by more people than ever before, and they're buying millions of televisions and preparing lots of food to mark the occasion. Here's a look at the mind-boggling stats for Super Bowl XLVII's TV audience.

Billions of chicken wings, millions of slices of pizza, and nearly 7 million pounds of avocados? Must be Super Bowl time.

It’s no secret: Football is America’s most popular sport, and the NFL its most widely-watched, profitable league. The numbers back that up: The Super Bowl is routinely the most-watched television event of the year, pulling in numbers that make other TV events flush with envy. According to the National Retail Federation (NRF), 179 million people worldwide are expected to watch the Baltimore Ravens take on the San Francisco 49ers in Super Bowl XLVII, up from 172 .5 million last year. The 2012 Oscars, by comparison, netted 39 million viewers. Game 5 of the 2012 NBA Finals? 12.5 million.

And America’s biggest TV-watching “holiday” is rapidly becoming one of its top consumer-spending holidays as well. The NRF projects that shoppers will spend a combined $12.3 billion on food, gear, and electronics for the Super Bowl this year, [by contrast, we spent a mere 2 billion from all sources electing a President, the entire House of Representatives, and one third of the Senate]up from $11 billion last year.

Why the jump? The NRF suggests that the teams involved could play a role. The 49ers and the Ravens are both hugely popular franchises that haven’t reached the Super Bowl in quite a while: The Ravens last made the trip in 2000; the once-dynastic 49ers in 1994. Some 17 million fans are expected to buy team apparel or accessories, up from 14.8 million last year.

Super stuffed

But for the most part, we’re spending our money on food. Super Bowl Sunday is the second-biggest food “holiday” in the US, behind Thanksgiving. It’s a booming weekend for the most popular foods: namely, wings, chips. and pizza.

An estimated 1.2 billion chicken wings will be consumed this Super Bowl Sunday, according to the Washington-based National Chicken Council. That’s down slightly from last year, because chicken wing prices have soared recently in the face of higher demand and soaring costs for feed – wings currently cost $2.11 per pound on average, up 26 cents from a year ago. There were even frantic rumors circulating last week of a Super Bowl chicken wing shortage, but the council quickly dispelled them.

"The good news for consumers is that restaurants plan well in advance to ensure they have plenty of wings for the big game," National Chicken Council [I'm not sure I'd want that on business card...]economist Bill Roenikg said in a press statement.

It’s also the busiest day of the year for pizza joints. Dominoes expects to sell 11 million slices this Super Bowl Sunday; Papa John’s sold around 8 million last year. Other big food stats: Football revelers ate 11.2 million pounds of potato chips last year. Another (surprising) contender: avocados. Thanks to guacamole, an estimated 79 million avocados will be eaten during Super Bowl festivities.

Of course, the Super Bowl is, more than any other, a day for watching television. And to properly mark the occasion, 7.5 million households intend to buy a new TV, according to the NRF. That’s 2 million more than last year, when 5.5. million households bought a new TV for the Super Bowl. Happy high-def football, everyone!

And let's not forget the brewskis:
Amazing Amount of Beer Consumed on Super Bowl Sunday

What’s the most important thing on Super Bowl Sunday? Most people would say the game, but on some lists it only comes in fourth behind parties, commercials and betting. And what’s the most important thing about parties? Some people would say beer because Americans drink a lot of it on Super Bowl Sunday.

According to Big Lead Sports Americans will drink 50 million cases of beer. That’s enough beer to fill Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis half way full. And a cost of $10.8 billion it’s enough to buy 10 B-2 stealth bombers.

94 percent of that beer on Super Bowl Sunday will be domestic brands – Bud Lite, Coors Lite, Budweiser, Miller Lite and Natural Lite.

And because when you drink all that beer you have to get rid of it, Super Bowl Sunday will mean 1.4 billion trips to the bathroom and more than 2 billion gallons of water to flush it away.

58 percent of people say they go to the bathroom during the game so they won’t miss the commercials.

7 million people will call in sick on the Monday after the Super Bowl.

Whatever else you want to say about The Super Bowl, it's great for the economy.... :ok

We're supposed to go over to my brother-in-law Roman Craig's for a game party....(I said I would throw one if the Redskins had made it...looks like I'm going to be saving a lot of coin.... :( )

Since the Niners are in it, it should be quite "festive" (which means that most of his friends will probably be rolling drunk....not that they really need much of an excuse...)

What plans do the rest of youse guys have for the game?

Roman's doing a barbecue, and in honor of The Game being in New Orleans, I'm making up a big pot of crawfish ettouffee.. (I had it the first time a few years ago at wine festival in Marin, and fell in love with it) also bringing six dozen oysters to grill...(I love barbecued oysters; I can eat a couple of dozen myself....)

Sounds good --like the etouffe idea, you go all in with the crawdad?

Tough balancing act when you actually want to watch the game. The bigger/more involved the party, the harder to watch it.

As for Wings, I still have no idea why the worst part of the bird is now the most popular. Years from now it will be studied as a marvel of marketing genius.

I'm picking up the crawfish, (and the oysters) at The Seafood Center tomorrow, (I'm having them clean the crawfish) I have a really good, spicy recipe...I'm going to make it before we leave, and then reheat it when we get there. (with a little rice and some good french bread, it's heavenly...I'm getting hungry just thinking about it....I think I'll make some extra just to have around here)

I tend to avoid anything with John Candy in it. :)

Your loss... :P (You've never even seen Planes Trains and Automobiles? That movie's hysterical. I'm a big John Candy fan going back to his days on Second City TV)

Anyway, in The Great Outdoors, Dan Ackroyd plays John Candy's brother-in-law, "Roman Craig" (Annette Benning plays Ackroyd's wife) a loud mouthed, braggartly type who likes to play the big shot, and has one shady business deal going on after another....a four star hustler phony....

The character reminds me a lot of my brother-in-law which is why I have given him that nom de plume to refer to him by every time I have occasion to mention him on this board....(lately he does seem to have hit on something that's bringing in some serious cash, which he likes to flash around....and having had to put up with him for years, I have no problem letting him spend it.... 8-) )

Especially if it's a huge casket... :?

So this 'Superbowl' that you guys worship... Is it a bit like the Holy Grail, only a bowl?
Why is it that when Miley Cyrus gets naked and licks a hammer it's 'art' and 'edgy' but when I do it I'm 'drunk' and 'banned from the hardware store'?

Piano case. But JC was Canadian so we try to be nicer about it and call it a 'music box'.

The Superbowl is so sacred to us Americans that our holy Superbowlic ritual has become an accepted & universally observed holiday that involves the mutilation of chickens, deep frying and then dipping them into sanctified sauce and consuming them along with mass quantities of light beer while we cheer for the team of our choice.

As a result, Superbowl Sunday is even more intense than a New Years Eve celebration. It ends with more drunk driving arrests and senseless violence than any other day of the year.

Proving that the real reason that we Americans love Superbowl Sunday is because it brings the guns out in us.

If the Niners win, I will definitely avoid The Mission...(Which I generally do anyway, unless I'm in the mood for good burritos, or need to pick up cheap cleaning supplies)

After the World Series win, the fleabaggers threw a riot there...

We had a Superbowl party at our house last night with three other couples and a few of their kids. I almost never eat chicken wings, as I agree with Long Run -- worst part of the bird. Nevertheless, in honor of our National Holiday we did up 20 pounds of wings. Also about a dozen or so avocados worth of guac. And we did go through a fair amount of beer. Didn't see hardly any of the game, but we did our part for the economy.

And no one's going to work in Bawlimer today, hon.

Chicen wings are the most optimal way to get the most sauce with the least amount of chicken. it's almost veg.
Okay... There's all kinds of things wrong with what you just said.

Jim- - - - - did you drive down Mission St. just for sh-ts and giggles last nite after the 49'ers lost? Just to spice things up, attach Ravens flags to your ride?
