For a man with a track record of religious slurs, John Galliano should know to keep his powder dry.
Instead, the designer has aggravated Jews and whipped up a cultural storm in New York by choosing to wear what looks suspiciously like an attempt at Hasidic garb.
The designer, who was sensationally fired in January 2011 from design heavyweight Christian Dior for an anti-Semitic rant at a Paris bar, wore a black rimmed hat, a long dark coat and what appeared to be peyos, or sidecurls on Tuesday.
The New York Post leapt to point an accusatory finger at Galliano, branding a full cover photo of the designer with the word "Shmuck!" next to the headline, "Jew-bash designer Galliano's costume mocks faithful".
Advertisement As incendiary as the look may be to some observers, Galliano is not known for dressing conservatively. Often playful, rarely dull and never lacking eccentricity, the 52-year-old has in the past been photographed resembling a pirate, a 20s mafioso and an Edwardian gentleman.
Stepping in to defend the latest eyebrow-raising costume, the Anti-Defamation League's Abraham Foxman has dismissed the cynical reading of the outfit as "a ridiculous, absurd distortion".
In a statement, he went on to say that there is no truth in the New York Post's rendering of Galliano as mocking Hasidim, "and anyone familiar with the dress of traditional Orthodox Jews should not mistake what Galliano is wearing in the photograph as Hasidic garb … Hasidim do not wear fedora hats, pinstripe pants, blue jackets or an ascot tie.
"This is John Galliano being John Galliano. His dress is always eccentric and his hair is always worn long … This is, at the very least, ignorance on the part of the reporters and editors at the Post, or, at worst, a deliberate, malicious distortion in an effort to sell newspapers.”
Foxman said that the designer, who has admitted to alcoholism, is attempting to mend his ways, even meeting with a Rabbi and learning Holocaust history after the infamous Parisian bar episode in which he slurred "I love Hitler".

Or someone might look at themselves in the mirror and really reflect on what image they are trying to portray. And I mean REALLY REFLECT.

Re: Jewish style
Come on, it's the NY Post, not an actual news source.
And really, that's the most outrageous attire they could find in New York City?????

Well it's the old kicked out guy who has been rehired (by whomever) and is trying to "stir it up".
Still needs to look in the mirror.

Re: Jewish style
The Guardian views it thus;
It is not for a shiksa such as myself to delve too deeply into John Galliano's eye-catching outfit choice this week, which featured peyos-style ringlets and a Lubavitch-type hat, and which some interpreted to be another of his thoughtful outreach attempts to the Jewish community.
Galliano was, of course, convicted in 2011 of making racist insults in a Paris bar, which has led some to brand his get-up the antisemitic equivalent of blackface. Others insist he always dresses funny. Funny like the Jews? It's unclear.
Apparently sick of people misinterpreting things, Galliano's publicist Liz Rosenberg has been speaking to reporters, and denying this is in any way a return to The Unpleasantness. "He was in designer attire from head to toe," she explained to the Daily Mail, "including a Stephen Jones hat and Yohji Yamamoto pants."
You have to salute Liz's commitment to service journalism, as she lists the provenance of the "pieces" for any fashion followers keen to recreate the look, somehow without adding "opinions: model's own".
But most of all, Lost in Showbiz loves that affronted-sounding "he was in designer attire from head to toe", as if the mere fact of a designer label and price tag magically insulates the wearer from any accusations of anything. Something for collectors of vintage Hugo Boss workwear to bear in mind.

Re: Jewish style
I took that insult to be directed at the New York Post (which deserves it--just on general principles, if nothing else) not at anybody here...
People who are wrong are just as sure they're right as people who are right. The only difference is, they're wrong.

I saw it as aimed directly at Strop, as rube has a long track record of posting insults about subjects other posters have chosen to post about. (particularly going out of his way to gratuitously bitch that the subject is trivial, sensationalist, etc....a normal, non-asshole type person would simply not post in a thread they felt that way about, but that wouldn't be our rube)
