House of Cards is an American political drama series developed and produced by Beau Willimon. It is an adaptation of a previous BBC miniseries of the same name which is based on the novel by Michael Dobbs. The entire first season premiered on February 1, 2013, on the streaming service Netflix.[1] A second season of 13 episodes is currently in production.[1][2]
Set in present day Washington, D.C., House of Cards is the story of Frank Underwood (Kevin Spacey), a Democrat from South Carolina's 5th congressional district and the House Majority Whip, who, after getting passed over for promotion to Secretary of State, decides to exact his revenge on those who betrayed him. The series also stars Robin Wright, Kate Mara, and Corey Stoll in lead roles.
The Dobbs book and series was great, I wonder how badly they can fuck it up here, like they did with so many others.

I'm a huge fan of the original, (I have the 3 part series on DVD; my personal favorite is the second installment, To Play The King) I think Ian Richardson's portrayal of Francis Urcutt is one of the finest performances in the history of television; he was born to play that role...
I like Kevin Spacey, but I really think this is something the world could have lived without....
The trailer at least made it look not as bad as I thought it could be, but I think it's telling that no network, cable or broadcast, picked it up and it's available solely through Netflix....

Yikes, that's not a good sign.
Thinking about it it may be a great sign!!
It may be intelligent, paced, nuanced and cultured. Therefore unsuitable to US TV.

I watched it two days ago and looking forward to more. I loved it! Kevin Spacey's character reminded me of Glenn Close in Damages. Very manipulative, cold, and unflinching. Another one of Spacey's movies I enjoyed was In the Garden of Good and Evil.

I imagine that a lot of people over here probably never saw it, (they did re-broadcast it again on BBC America a couple of weeks ago, don't know if they're planning to show it again) of the three segments, the one that got the most play in the US on PBS was the last one, The Final Cut.... (In fact I saw that one first which is what got me to buy the whole set.)
For anyone who likes this series, I strongly suggest seeing the original....

Did anyone watch this? Kevin Spacey was magnificent -- I couldn't stop watching the series -- both the Swede and I jammed through the entire 13 shows in a weekend or two of watching, including some late nights when neither of us could put the tablet down.
And BTW, it was on Netflix because they own the rights and produced the series, not because no one else wanted it. It was also just nominated for three Emmy Awards: the show itself, Spacey, and Robin Wright.
I've been watching the original now, and I keep on falling asleep.
