There's a new game in Manchester - turning "Cuneyt Cakir" into a well-known phrase or saying.

Real Madrid manager Jose Mourinho has claimed "the best team lost" after 10-man Manchester United were knocked out of the Champions League. United went ahead in the last-16 second leg tie before Nani was controversially dismissed for a high challenge. Cristiano Ronaldo, on his return to Old Trafford, then tapped in the winner after Luka Modric's stunning equaliser.

"Independent of the decision, the best team lost. We didn't deserve to win but football is like this," Mourinho said. Following a 1-1 draw in Spain, United had edged a tight second-leg opening in which captain Nemanja Vidic struck the post with a powerful header.

They finally took the lead - on the night and on aggregate - at the start of the second half, when Sergio Ramos deflected Nani's cross into his own net.
The match then turned in Real's favour just before the hour mark when referee Cuneyt Cakir dismissed the Portuguese for a high boot that made contact with Alvaro Arbeloa's rib-cage.

Mourinho's side took advantage of the decision in clinical fashion. Former Tottenham player Modric curled in a sublime equaliser after he came off the substitute's bench, and Ronaldo scored from close range after a stylish move. "My feeling is that Manchester United were playing very well, were very compact and aggressive in a good way," Mourinho added. "I doubt that 11 v 11 we win the match. I know Manchester United are giants, not just physically but mentally. I know they have a manager who can motivate then, but I was waiting for us to play in a different way."

I'm guessing soccer.
I'm guessing some team won who was the "lesser opponent".
Im guessing the better teams star player got penalized and the team had to play a man down.

But what is a "high challenge"?

One of those inanely named Spanish (or Portuguese) players - Nani, Kaka, PooPoo whatever - managed to get the studs of his right boot firmly embedded in another player's chest. Perhaps I exaggerate a little. The ball was coming high toward him and he lifted his boot to bring the ball down or deflect it. Another player came from his blind side and happened to put his chest in the way of the already flying foot. Ouch but not too much of an ouch. If DingDong had seen him coming and still put up his boot - that's a red card and goodbye. But the fact was that the Real Madrid player ran onto the boot and it wasn't even worth a yellow card, let alone red. As ref, I wouldn't have even given a foul - collisions happen and neither player lost advantage by it. It was a drop-ball and everyone continue as before

Good guesses by the way. Although BingBong is not their star player. But if you play 10 men of a great team againsts 11 men of another great team.... losing is not unusual. It was the other team's manager who said Man Utd deserved to win; they were playing better than Real Madrid, had scored and looked fit for another goal at least. Then they get cut down to ten men for over 30 minutes. Playing some rubbish French team they could probably have held out but not against Real Madrid

LMFAO - as soon as I saw the thread title and poster I knew exactly what this was going to be about...

I wouldn't go as far as to say that the best team lost but up to that point United's tactics were working well and not only were they containing Madrid, they'd gotten the all important goal. Then the ref decided to make a name for himself (my personal favourite is Crikey, a Cunt!) and the whole match was turned on it's head. What had started as one of the most eagerly anticipated footy games in years became a farce!

I do throw some of the blame Fergie's way though... He was too busy screaming at the officials to organise his men and as a result they ware headless chickens until Madrid scored their second. He needed to get a striker off immediately (Van Persie didn't look much like scoring anyway) and get either Valencia or Kagawa on. As it was, Jose took the opportunity to get Modric on and completely boss the midfield.

Oh well, onwards and upwards... Chelski in the cup on Saturday and then get the league wrapped up.

But I'm only about half way through on it, and I'll post it when it's done...(I know I don't normally do that kind of lengthy satirical post on this board...I generally fly by the seat of my pants with contemporary political analysis around here... but for some reason this one gave me an inspiration...

Yeah Sean - I hope they down Chelsea like a rabid dog. The league's a cinch anyway - kind of a let-down almost if they don't get the Cup
Good point about Von Richtoffen - must have had oil on his goggles as he didn't even look like he knew which direction the goal was, let alone scoring. Not a good day to have a bad day

Bad weekend Sean.... two teams scoring twice and letting go of the game. (and onw, it's Leonard Cohen stuff breaking out in the middle of a football discussion). Real football that is - played with feet and a ball - no hands.

T'wasn't a great weekend Meade but I'm grateful to still be in the cup. Spurs were unlucky to get the Scousers just when they're getting their act together a bit...

Arms are useful for balance older. In real football players (except for Suarez) try to stay on their feet rather than just hurling themselves at an opponent...
