The number of pre-teenage girls on the Pill has increased fivefold in the past decade, shocking figures reveal.
Last year doctors prescribed the oral contraceptive to more than 1,000 girls aged 11 and 12, usually without their parents' knowledge.
Another 200 aged between 11 and 13 were given long-term implanted or injectable contraceptive devices on the NHS.
Family campaigners said the figures showed how children were being sexualised at an ever younger age and raised disturbing questions about the prevalence of underage sex.
Although the age of consent in Britain is 16, GPs are allowed to prescribe the Pill to children if they believe an underage girl is mature enough to have sex.
And under the laws of patient confidentiality, parents have no right to be told if their children are being given the Pill.
The figures come from the General Practice Research Database, a Department of Health-funded body which collects information on prescriptions from 500 GP practices covering a representative sample of four million patients.
They show that three in every 10,000 children aged 11 - and three out of every 1,000 12-year-olds - were prescribed the Pill last year. Across the whole of Britain, that works out at more than 1,000 children under the age of 13 and is a fivefold rise on 1999.

How young is too young?
How young is too young?

Re: How young is too young?
How young is too young to get teh contraceptive pill? Or how young is too young to get pregnant?
If these 11 to 13 year old girls are having sex, then giving them the pill is appropriate.

Bah!

Re: How young is too young?
While I agree they should be on the pill if they are having sex, the thought of an 11 y old mum being totally abhorrent, shouldn't the circumstances of them being sexualised at that age be investigated?
To coin a cliche, WTF is up with their parents?

Well yea, the upbringing is deplorable, but at least they're not breeding and perpetuating the cycle.

Not yet, anyway...

Re: How young is too young?
It is treating the symptom and not the disease, but it does extend the time period that these girls might grow some sense. I think the rise of internet usage is part of the equation too.

Re: How young is too young?
It used to be very common...my great-grandmother had her first child at age 17. My grandmother was married a week after her 18th birthday, and was a grandmother 2 weeks past age 41.

Re: How young is too young?
It was common when life expectancies were shorter. With lief expectancies being so much longer (especially for women) we have the luxury of letting our children grow into adulthood, get an education, get a job, learn about life, before they take on parenting. I'd much prefer the trend of older parents continue.

Re: How young is too young?
However women still only have until their mid 30's before the chance of birth defects start increasing drastically.
Okay... There's all kinds of things wrong with what you just said.
Re: How young is too young?
Oh please not the old possibility of birth defects argument.
There is a world of difference between 13 and 33, and in particular plenty of time to finish school and experience life before becoming a parent.

Re: How young is too young?
old?
My point is as a society we have been gravitating toward the extremes neither of which are particularly healthy for people and society.
so what age would that be in your estimation?
Here's mine:
18-22 bachelor degree
23-28 getting and establishing a career
28-? getting enough disposable income to do all those things you want to do before settling down to have a baby.
My wife and I were lucky enough to get in just under the line before the statistics jump (we won't be so lucky if we choose to have another) and still our risk bracket isn't that pretty
The fact is the "plenty of time to have it all" argument is shit. We should be teaching people that life involves making difficult choices and you should plan your life accordingly.

We "ALL" do what we think we think we can get away with...
Sometimes it seems as though one has to cross the line just to figger out where it is
Re: How young is too young?
One of teh main benefits of our first world societies was supposed to be equality of opportunity for all. We no longer send working class kids down mines or up chimneys, there are social nets under social nets to help people falling through the cracks.
Yet we seem to have in some areas of the UK, a regression back to the days when under class 12 year old girls were seen as having no future other than breeding.
Why I wonder.
