As for me, I agree that was a pretty cool, kind of like a 3/4 court shot going in at the end of a basketball period.

I'm glad my grandson plays baseball.

The keeper actually got a hand to it... fair play.

Yeah it's a helluva goal, so there.

Certainly, but the recognition of a physical achievement, such as that goal, is not about taste.

Re: GoaaaaaAaAaAaAALLLLLLL!!!!!!
Okay...
Well that looks to me like not a physical achievement, (hell, I could kick a soccer ball that far) but more like pure luck...
Like scoring a hole-in-one on a golf course....
How many times are Hail Mary kicks like that made in a soccer game?
And how many times do they succeed?
It's like an 80 yard pass in a football game, or a 60 yard field goal kick....
Yeah it happens, but very low percentage....
Huge luck factor involved....

I'll defer to Sean and Meade about this, but almost never at that level of the game would be my bet.Lord Jim wrote: How many times are Hail Mary kicks like that made in a soccer game?
Rarely.Lord Jim wrote: And how many times do they succeed?
But here's the killer..
Jim $100 to a charity of your choosing, if you can provide me with evidence of your kicking a ball half the length of a soccer pitch, which does not bounce before reaching the line.Lord Jim wrote: Well that looks to me like not a physical achievement, (hell, I could kick a soccer ball that far) but more like pure luck...

Re: GoaaaaaAaAaAaAALLLLLLL!!!!!!
How many yards is that?
I have surprisingly impressive lower body strength for a man of my age and unimpressive overall physical condition....
If we're talking 40 yards, I can definitely kick a soccer ball 40 yards in the air....
If it's 60 or 70 yards, probably not so much...

The length of the pitch for international adult matches is in the range of 100–110 m (110–120 yd) and the width is in the range of 64–75 m (70–80 yd).

Re: GoaaaaaAaAaAaAALLLLLLL!!!!!!
Okay, I've looked at that clip repeatedly...
And he's not kicking from mid field or beyond...
It looks like he's kicking from about 35-40 yards out....
I could make that kick....
Could I do it with a bunch of other guys rushing at me like this guy did?
Probably not....
Could I kick it that far and be sure it went into the net?
Definitely not...
But neither could the guy who made this kick....
Regardless of his skills, it was a lucky shot....

Re: GoaaaaaAaAaAaAALLLLLLL!!!!!!
My dad used to say "Son, if you hit what you are aiming at, it's never luck".
The centre circle marks 10 yards from the centre spot/halfway line. Using that as the yardstick, the man was past the half-way line by about 3 yards. So he kicked the ball in the air 52-57 yards.
It was not a "hail mary" (which is defined by NOT being aimed and takes place just at the end of a half or fulltime - throwing the ball as far forward as possible toward a converging buch of players in the hope that one might catch it or deflect it so that it is caught).
It was a precisely placed kick which was made at all only because the player recognized that the goalkeeper was too far forward from the goal line and would have difficult going back to reach the ball.
Goals like this come along once in a while. Beckham hit this beauty:
The (real) football (foot plus ball) version of the "hail mary" is the hopeful punt into the penalty area toward a bunch of players as time expires hoping that something might happen before the whistle blows.
I couldn't kick that ball that far without it bouncing; I couldn't aim it that well; I probably could not see the goalkeeper's position well enough to judge the weight of the kick. And nor could LJ

For Christianity, by identifying truth with faith, must teach-and, properly understood, does teach-that any interference with the truth is immoral. A Christian with faith has nothing to fear from the facts

Re: GoaaaaaAaAaAaAALLLLLLL!!!!!!
Very few players in the world would take on a shot like that. It takes a special combination of skill and balls of steel. To put it in perspective... He hit the ball about 55 yards, aiming for the top corner. This is about a 2 x 2ft (and that's being generous!) spot where the keeper is highly unlikely to reach it. Not only that, he hit it with enough pace to ensure that the keeper didn't have time to reposition himself. As I said, I was impressed by the fact that the keeper got his fingertips to it,
It is ludicrous and an insult to the player to suggest that such an achievement is 'lucky' and I would happily double Gob's offer to anybody here* who could achieve the feat. Not only that, I'll give you the rest of your lives to do it!
*If anybody here happens to be called Ronaldo, Bale, Ibrahimovich, Ronaldinho or Beckham the bet's off.

Why is it that when Miley Cyrus gets naked and licks a hammer it's 'art' and 'edgy' but when I do it I'm 'drunk' and 'banned from the hardware store'?
Re: GoaaaaaAaAaAaAALLLLLLL!!!!!!
Oh pu-leeze....It takes a special combination of skill and balls of steel.
We're talking about a game where the players kick the ball up and down the field all day long while frequently winding up with a score of 1-0, and 3-0 is considered a rout....
Countless shots that have little or no chance of succeeding are taken every day in this sport....(much like hockey)
To take a shot like this (assuming that's what he was actually doing; he might have just been trying to kick the ball far down the field and accidentally scored a goal) doesn't require metallic testicles; all it requires is being a hot dog or a show boat....
In a game where so few points are scored versus the number of scoring attempts, he was risking exactly nothing...

Re: GoaaaaaAaAaAaAALLLLLLL!!!!!!
No offence Jim but the fact that you think they score "points" tells me how little you know about the game...

I have to agree with our overseas mates. That goal was not lucky. I'd bet that he and others practice kicks like that just for when this type of opportunity arrives.
There is no evidence that this was a last minute attempt at a goal, which would have supported the hail mary attempt to win a match. Otherwise his teammates would have mobbed him.
I'm curious, Jim. What do you think of a home run in baseball? Does that just happen when someone swings with all his might for the seats and gets lucky?
For those foreigners out there...
Definition of HOME RUN
1: a hit in baseball that enables the batter to make a complete circuit of the bases and score a run
