But that straightforward approach to making a cuppa is not good enough for chef Heston Blumenthal, famed for his risk-taking gastronomy.

Image

He has developed a tea maker that brings his hi-tech culinary approach into the home, casting aside the teapot and teabag.

His £199.99 stainless steel Sage Tea Maker claims to deliver the perfect brew from what is effectively a combined kettle and teapot. It can even be used instead of a teasmade as it has a delay setting, allowing users to wake up to a perfect cup of tea.

The device, one of a range of appliances he has created, has five temperature and time settings based on whether you are using normal black tea leaves or green, white, herbal or oolong varieties.

‘The right time and temperature are critical for a great cuppa,’ said Blumenthal.

Toughened glass jug is filled with the correct amount of water for the cups needed – 500ml = 2 cups.
Tea Maker sits on power base, which holds the setting buttons and connects to mains.
Five different tea settings – black, white, green, herbal, oolong.
Leaves are put in to jug basket using tea scoop – one per cup.
Water is heated to the correct temperature for the tea type.
Basket lowers into the hot water for the correct time period for the tea type.
Black = 100°C for 2mins; White = 85°C for 3mins; Green = 80°C for 3mins; Herbal = 100°C for 4mins; Oolong = 90°C for 3mins.
Three different strength settings – mild, medium, strong.
Timer function allows maker to be set to turn on automatically first thing in the morning.
Warmer function allows the brewed tea to be kept warm for up to one hour.
Override function to increase the temperature or brewing time to meet personal taste.
Tea Maker can be used as variable temperature kettle.
£199.99.

‘Different teas need to be brewed at different temperatures, and we all have a favourite strength.

‘You fill the stainless steel basket with leaves, tell it the type of tea, select the strength and it will heat the water, slowly lower the basket, then raise the basket from the water when it’s done.’

The Tea Maker keeps the beverage warm for up to 60 minutes and can also be used as a conventional kettle or to brew coffee. It is part of the new Sage by Heston Blumenthal range that includes an ice cream maker and a juicer. Most expensive in the range is a £549.99 Barista Express coffee machine to make espressos and cappuccinos.

A four-slice motorised toaster, costing £169.99, toasts bread depending on its ingredients and thickness. It has defrost and crumpet settings.

A triumph of technology is to heat water to a controlled temperature and steep tea for a controlled amount of time?

A triumph of marketing, you mean.

An idea/product without marketing is just a dust collector in someones workshop.

Not to mention that it is a fully automated tea maker programmed to produce the proper cup of tea based on time of steeping and temperature. A technological triumph? Perhaps one akin to the automated drip coffee makers that came out in the 70s and changed the way many of us make coffee; not the best way to make coffee, but it's easy and beat the hell out the boiling/percolation makers which were in use at that time. Or maybe even like the single cup makers that get us to pay 75 cents to a dollar for a nickle's worth of coffee.

Yep, that's what everyone is saying "it's a triumph of technology".

Up there with finding lead in rice.

Now now, you're being too tough on rube....

This involves an interactive chemical process...

Something that rube obviously cannot be expected to understand...

Father Guido Sarducci:

Thank you. Something a-wonderful has happened to-a me. I was-a chosen to be the SPOKESMAN for this-a wonderful new product. And, Bill, I want to thank you, because the reason they picked me was because they saw me on-a this show. And-a, really, from-a the bottom of-a my heart, I do thank you.

And, you know, Joe DiMaggio does-a this-a commercial -- he's-a the spokesman for something called-a Mr. Coffee, and-a I think that's-a why-a they-a wanted me, too. This-a product, it's-a called Mr. Tea. Mr. Tea. And-a, you know, I don't even drink-a tea. And I said to them, "I don't-a drink-a tea," but they said, "That's okay. We want you anyway." And-a, I just-a love-a this-a product. What I like about it is, it's-a SO simple. All you have to do is get-a like a tea cup, or a coffee cup, whatever you call it, and you put a tea bag right inside of it here, and then you put the cup -- it fits right in here -- and then, you get hot, boiling water... and-a just-a pour the hot water into the Mr. Tea machine... [ he demonstrates these actions ] And, as-a you can see, the water comes-a down through here, down there, right into the cup! And then, all you have to do is wait two, three minutes... and then it's done! And it depends -- if you want it real strong, I've found that you should-a leave the tea bag in there quite a while. And, also, if you-a don't want it strong, you can use it two, three times over and over, so it's-a real economical, too.

But-a all of that is explained to you, in this-a little booklet that comes for free with it. [ he holds up the booklet ] It's called-a "How to Use Yuor Mr. Tea." But, basically, what it is, is you supply the tea bag and the hot water, and Mr. Tea does-a the rest. It's $9.95. nine dollars and ninety-five cents. And I get twelve cents for-a every one of these they sell. And the Mr. Tea people, they said they think they're gonna sell a whole lot for Christmas, you know? I did-a this-a Christmas commercial for them, it shows me making Mr. Tea for these Santa's elves. They got-a these little midget men to dress up as elves, 'cause they didn't have real elves.

So... I want-a wish-a all of you a merry, merry Little Christmas -- or, as we say in Italian: Buon Piccolo Natale!

Just because it's nearly winter doesn't mean Christmas is coming anymore (at least for you)
