More smoking bans. Good.

Post by Gob »

The ACT Government wants to ban smoking at playgrounds, jails, public swimming pools, sporting fields, bus interchanges and university campuses in a bid to prevent the harmful effects of second hand smoke and to “de-normalise” tobacco use.

Chief Minister Katy Gallagher said the ACT Office of Regulatory Services would be required to enforce any changes to smoking legislation and they may need additional resources as their workload increased.

“But we're not going to have an army of smoking police going around fining people,” she said.

“You get much better compliance when you have signs up and people changing their behaviour because the message is you're not to smoke near a playground. If you smoke near a playground with a big sign up you become a bit of a social pariah.”

Advertisement Under the proposals, the government would move to ban smoking in ACT correctional facilities in August, on university campuses by September, and outside building entrances by October 2014.

ACT Chief Health Officer Dr Paul Kelly said there was evidence that making it difficult for people to smoke in certain areas meant fewer people smoked.

“It gives the message that this is not a normal activity,” he said.

This has been de rigueur around here since the last century, glad you're catching up.

Still waiting for that study that uses sound, scientifically valid methodology to back up anything like the "50,000 deaths a year are caused by second hand smoke" claim....

Waiting waiting waiting....(as another poster here is fond of saying... ;) )

The next study I see that meets that criteria will be the first....

Of course, no one in their right mind would argue that "second hand smoke" is good for you, or even completely harmless...

But neither is standing on a city street corner inhaling the exhaust fumes of cars idling at a stopped light....

And to date, not one single scientifically valid study has been produced that shows the health risk of the former to be greater than the later...

Not one...

And once more the disdain for anyone rubato sees as lesser than him shines through.
Okay... There's all kinds of things wrong with what you just said.

You'll have to forgive rube; he spent his formative years eating a diet that consisted largely of leaded rice...

Speaking of menial labor...

But I think smoking is glamorous....

The light affixed to the car (ie;brake light or tail light) has come to a stop at the intersection due to the fact that the car has come to a stop.

I can't wait to read your explanation for why people would be standing next to those cars and inhaling the exhaust.

What exhaust?

They're electric.

We do, but we prefer to stick with the proper English spelling of words. :nana
