Hybrid Stage of Life

I recently asked my employer if I could change my status at the beginning of next year from FTE to "hourly." The understanding would be that I would work two full days per week in the office, and two half-day WFH's, for a total of 24 scheduled hours a week. And of course if the job demands it, I will work additional hours to get the job done. I currently have a lot of dead time, even though I seek out work wherever I can find it. (My current boss and my next boss are both out-of-state, and I am the only local person in the department. They don't really know how busy I am).
This change, if accepted, would be the perfect transition phase for me, between full-time employment and retirement. It would allow me to do all of the stuff I enjoy doing (tennis, golf, exercise, bicycling, house work, motorcycling), and would, frankly, give my employer the same level of "coverage" that it gets now.
On October 1 (the beginning of the next fiscal year), my function will be transferred to the Legal department (an unusual move, since I am not in house Counsel, but merely a Contracts Guy who happens to be an attorney). The Boss responded that this has never been done before, but he personally has no objection to it. The HR department and the head of Legal will jointly decide if this is possible.
I pointed out that the company would be saving at least half of my total cost, since I will have no benefits (other than statutory), and no eligibility for bonus.
I will get the company's official answer on October 1st, after my transfer is complete and the new fiscal year begins. I will turn 64 in September, and plan to retire fully in two years. I probably cost myself a good bonus for this year by planting this seed in my boss' ear.
This change would truly make my life more enjoyable. I suppose I should put my proposal in writing sometime in mid-September, so there are no misunderstandings.
