The Evil RC Church

Post by dgs49 »

We had a bishop from India as a visiting celebrant in our parish church yesterday.

Not much fun for Catholics in rural, poverty-stricken India these days. In short, they are providing permanent and short term life support (food, clothing, shelter, medical care, and education) to a couple thousand orphans under age 12, and running trade schools for a couple thousand kids from ages 12-16, none of which require that you be Catholic to benefit. He was also seeking sponsors for Indian men seeking to go to the seminary and become priests, at $500/yr for four years.

As we left the church, there was a hoagie (big sandwich) sale to benefit an orphanage and school in Mexico, founded by a local priest (Fr. Scott Seethaler).

But of course, none of this means anything, right? Better to let the kids starve and remain homeless, because those schools might infect the kids with ideas like sex and procreation are reserved for Christian marriage. And buggery is sinful.

Pity.

The RC Church needs a better press agent.

Of course this act of charity will go largely unnoticed due to the fact that there is no sexual content.

Your collective inability to acknowledge this obvious truth makes you all look like fools.

Yeah Dave makes it come off as bitter and unfocused. Not a good investment by any standard.

So that's how you sum up christian, or even catholic teachings? When Jesus was invited to do this, he said that one should love god and love one's neighbor; no condmenation, no reference to marriage (chrisitan or otherwise), yet you only discuss condmenation of sex outside of "chrsitian" marriage (whatever that is), and that buggery is a sin. Jesus preaches love, you preach condemnation.

Pity.

Dales list of "interpretations" of "gods word" only highlight the fact that the bible was not the product of a divine infallible being.

So what are you saying Dave? Are you saying that these people do these good deeds because they are Catholic and not simply because they are good people?
Personally I have a lot more time for non-believers who are good people because they think it's the right way to be than people who are good people because God 'told' them it's the right way to be.
Why is it that when Miley Cyrus gets naked and licks a hammer it's 'art' and 'edgy' but when I do it I'm 'drunk' and 'banned from the hardware store'?

Nope.

Jesus did not get his info from any source.

Jesus was (and is) the Word of God: "In the beginning was the Word, the Word was with God, and the Word was God. ... And the Word was made flesh, and dwelled among us ...."

Jesus was (and is) the Word of God who became flesh and lived among us. Paul was not.

As the living embodiment of the Word of God -- as the living embodiment of God -- Jesus could not have needed any source for any of his utterances.
Reason is valuable only when it performs against the wordless physical background of the universe.

Indeed, I was simplifying it for Gob.

Jesus is GOD always has been and always will be.

Interesting that some will embrace Jesus' sayings, yet reject parts of Scripture.

Perhaps they don't buy the notion that all of Scripture is equally inspired. The process by which the biblical canon was established was as much political as anything else.

Speaking of The Roman Catholic Church, I have a rave for a PBS series on the subject:
Catholicism
It's a 10 part series on the subject that was produced in 2011, but I missed it when it was first released...

We've caught a couple of episodes on one of our local PBS stations the past few weeks...

It's hosted by a Roman Catholic Priest, Fr. Robert Barron, who's not at all "fire and brimstone"....

In the segments we've watched, the show goes into issues like The Trinity and The Divinity Of Mary, and discusses them in a very intelligent and accessible way...

I'm going to see if I can't get the whole set...

My allusion was to the fact that in the eyes of the MSM and contemporary American liberalism, the RC Church is fatally flawed (theologically) because it condemns same-sex "marriage," homosexual sodomy, and artificial birth control. Not to mention abortion.

Thus for most progressives in our midst, nothing the Church might do in a charitable vein can compensate for these fatal flaws.

Of course, for people like Andrew, the Church will never live down how it treated the "Native Americans" in what is now California. They don't need to focus on its more contemporary failings.

Compensate? In what way? the "victims" (or use your own word) of the condemnations and the beneficiaries of the charitable acts are quite different; how can one compensate for the other. Many organized crime figures donate toys to children at christmas, donate to food kitchens, etc.; but if a family member was harmed by them, I wouldn't say the charitable acts somehow compensated for what happened to my family member.

The RC church (as any religious institution) remains free to preach what they choose; but doing some good does not give them a pass on the damage they do by their positions, or the consequences of them.
