Women-only gyms exist because there are too many men who see the gym as a place to pick up, rather than workout, and women want to feel comfortable wearing attire that is best suited to their workouts without attracting unwanted attention.
There is no reason why men-only gyms could not exist for the same reason, except for the fact that they wouldn't do much business because all of the men who see the gym as a place to pickup, rather than workout, would not patronize them.

As a gay man you miss-judge females. Of course when I go to a golf course I am just there to stare at balls.Scooter wrote:Women-only gyms exist because there are too many men who see the gym as a place to pick up, rather than workout, and women want to feel comfortable wearing attire that is best suited to their workouts without attracting unwanted attention.

Re: men only
If women were only going to gyms to work out, they wouldn't wear make up to them (a habit I find horrifying and would/ have never indulge(d) in).

Re: men only
I didn't suggest that there wasn't a subset of women who go to the gym seeking male attention, only that there is a substantial subset who are not, hence the popularity of women-only gyms.

Oh you should see Holly our little gym bunny. She's got full slap on, oompah loompah style, every morning at 6.00am when she opens up shop! She used to be quite cute, but it's all looking a little forced with her now..
This is NOT our gym...
We know that walking into a gym can be intimidating. We've all been there before. The last thing we want is for you to feel self-conscious when you're running on the treadmill or approaching a new piece of equipment for the first time.
So we only employ female staff members who are – above anything else – friendly and approachable. We’re always walking around the gym floor, on hand, ready to answer any questions you may have. All you need to do is ask!

If men want to sit around in leather chairs smoking cigars, (I like a good cigar every now and then) then I say more power to them....
Personally I prefer the company of women; on the whole I find them more interesting... (a little nuts, but more interesting...

My best friend is a guy, but my next closest friend is a former girlfriend....

Re: men only
Any club that has the ability to be selective in membership is outside of my domain and I couldn't care less about their problems.

Re: men only
Jimmy,
Imagine wanting to be in a single-gender environment FOR SOME THINGS, and a mixed environment for others. I enjoy bowling in both a men's league (in which having a couple women would substantially impair the enjoyment), and also in a mixed league in which the men-women interaction is a positive aspect of the experience. In fact, when the "mixed" league starts to tilt one way or the other, we recruit new bowlers of the appropriate gender to even it out.
Same activity, different environment. Both enjoyable, and both would be impaired if changed.
