Margaret Dumont was perhaps the greatest straight-woman/man of all time if for no other reason than her iron-willed commitment to the bit. Don't let anyone tell you she didn't get the jokes; she made them work.

Having just now looked it up, she actually got her start doing vaudeville and musical comedies more than 20 years before teaming up with the Marx Brothers in their Broadway shows The Cocoanuts and Animal Crackers, roles which she reprised in the film versions.

My favorite line from The Cocoanuts:

I always got kick out of how Groucho and Alice Cooper were friends as Groucho was one of the fe people that got Alice was doing Vaudeville
