yet the protest here is focused solely on Muslim and Jewish practice. Why is that?
That's an interesting question....

I couldn't help but notice, that all the outrage over this in this thread seems to flow from our resident atheists....

Who are not particularly known for their supportive comments for any religious belief or practice...

Could it possibly be that their contempt for religion in general is more the motivating factor for the outrage?

Nah...perish the thought... ;)

To be honest Sue, I've never been entirely clear on that point...

I've seen you post things that were sympathetic to the atheist view point, but I've also gotten the impression that you might still be practicing Judaism (albeit somewhat casually, as I practice Catholicism)

Perhaps I should have said "our resident non-American atheists"... 8-)

Scooter, I guess I'm remembering incorrectly but I thought at one time I had asked you and you told me you weren't an atheist...

You know, I was going to say "last time I checked, the Anschuss hadn't happened yet" but I decided it would be unnecessarily provocative.

Yeah, me neither.

As I said elsewhere, I belong to a synagogue, I am active in its affairs and in the community on its behalf, I send my kids to its religious school, we observe the holidays. I don't believe in a "God" per se -- nor, as far as I can tell, do most people who belong to my synagogue, nor do many who are actively part of the Reform movement. My version of "faith" is something different entirely.

And some choose to worship the Golden Calf.

Your collective inability to acknowledge this obvious truth makes you all look like fools.

Well they are responsible for mass slaughter in what many consider an very inhumane way for "religious" reasons.

Why is it that when Miley Cyrus gets naked and licks a hammer it's 'art' and 'edgy' but when I do it I'm 'drunk' and 'banned from the hardware store'?

It could be both! :D

I'll happily admit my contempt for all religion, and deep contempt for animal cruelty dressed up as religious practice....

Sue U is quite honest in her Judaic beliefs [as far as I know them], in that:
'God is Unknowable'

We try our best, but it's fair to assume, we cannot know the divine whilst in the materiel.

Cruelty? Which was less cruel than godless nature itself?
