LJ I do sympathise with your feelings but from an English language point of view you are not correct. "They" must always refer to the closest plural before the use of "they". In this case, the plural is "Liberal states".

Therefore rubato's post stated that Liberal states do not care and want their daughters to be knocked up etc. (Although I do believe he wanted it to mean 'Conservative states'. At any rate "they" cannot refer to a plural two places removed.
