Take a pill

Andrew must have gotten access to those secret Vatican archives.

Obama does a backflip...
Speaking at the White House, President Obama said: "No woman's health should depend on who she is or where she works".
The adjustment to the policy would mean Americans would not have to choose between "religious liberty and basic fairness", he said.
Under the new plan put forward by the White House health insurance companies, rather than the employer, will be required to offer contraception directly to employees of religious-linked institutions if requested.
The institutions - such as universities or hospitals - would not be required to subsidise the cost of offering birth control to their employees, nor would they be asked to refer them to organisations that provide it.
Women could obtain contraceptives directly from their insurance provider, free of charge, the White House said.
The adjustment to the policy "accommodates religious liberty while protecting the health of women", the White House added.

Re: Take a pill
The reality is that the employer will be paying for the insurance anyway, regardless of how the employee is accessing it, but if Catholic institutions are prepared to accept this fig leaf then everyone comes away happy.

Re: Take a pill
Works for me. As it should be anyway - birth control is a basic health service and should be encouraged by the insurers. Would they rather pay for birth control or prenatal care and delivery??

Re: Take a pill
Why would any employer want to make it more likely for its employees to get pregnant?
I guess it's more important to control what people do in their bedroom, even if it eventually makes them miss work.

Re: Take a pill
How is this a 'backflip'? It isn't even a change. It just underlines what was already true that the HI provider would be paying for the pills (depo-provera, IUDs &c)

Re: Take a pill
Just out of interest, how much would the pill cost in the USA?
In the UK it is free, in Aus if you have a medicare card the pill will cost about $30 for a 4 month supply and an implanon implant will cost around $300.

If you pay cash its about $50 / month for birth control pills. Not insignificant for a working single mother.Gob wrote:Just out of interest, how much would the pill cost in the USA?

The standard 28/month packs are about 25-30 per month without insurance. The 4/month or other options like the ring are 50-60/month without insurance.
Depending on the plan, and I have what is considered top tier health plan, it is still about half that with insurance, although you can do mail order and get a 3 month supply for 2 months co-pay (it used to be 3 months for 1 month co-pay). Or go to Planned Parenthood or here, the MA sponsored health care clinics, and perhaps get it free.
No idea what the implant costs, or an IUD, without insurance.

Re: Take a pill
Thanks for that Guin. So not really a huge cost, would the poor get any help with paying for contraception, are there any free contraception services?

And of course men can use these for discounts...

Re: Take a pill
Its a significant cost if you're scrambling just to make rent and feed your family.
And yes, there is some free care available -- through private concerns like Planned Parenthood, or through the state -- but its becoming scarcer, and demand higher.

Re: Take a pill
Oh and you need an annual doc visit to get it - prescription required -- which is another layer of time and cost.

Good point. Those would be free in Aus for people in those circumstances.Guinevere wrote:Oh and you need an annual doc visit to get it - prescription required -- which is another layer of time and cost.

Republicans appear to be saying that a Muslim employer should be able to bar his female employees from seeing a male doctor and a Christian Scientist employer should be able to refuse to provide any medical insurance at all on the grounds that you should never see a doctor.
