Religion vs smoke alarms
Re: Religion vs smoke alarms
Google, not the Amish, is your source, got it.
Re: Religion vs smoke alarms
It's an academic source, loCA, from a college program on Amish studies. Do you have any source whatsoever to cite?

Re: Religion vs smoke alarms
Some years ago at Stone Ledge Farms I contracted an Amish builder to replace the roof on our barn. He wasn't very Amish - drove a truck. But all the workers were Amish all right. No power tools - couldn't drive an auto but had no problem sitting in one being driven by someone else. And their notion of OSHA?
One guy stood with a foot on either side of the roof pitch holding a rope tied to his waist and to the waist of the workers lower down the slopes....... if one fell, I guess the idea was he'd go too! Their particular community in Ohio did ban telephones except for one, placed on a pole out in a field adjacent to most of their dwellings. I guess that was for emergencies..... such as falling off a roof.
Oom Willie from Bloemfontein visits Ohio - definitely not Amish

For Christianity, by identifying truth with faith, must teach-and, properly understood, does teach-that any interference with the truth is immoral. A Christian with faith has nothing to fear from the facts
Re: Religion vs smoke alarms
Death rates from the lack of OH & S legislation and regulations in the past was considerably higher.
I agree some people use (or attempt to use) the current regime to eliminate all risk from every aspect of life. they should not. But some things should not be ignored or not complied with due to any personal beliefs. I believe that smoke alarms are one of them.
What would be the cost to a person if their house was connected to the grid simply to run a smoke alarm?
I would imagine it would be quite small once connected. over here, the connection is free and you only pay for usage.

Re: Religion vs smoke alarms
Nothing major but wanted to make sure I was not misunderstood. My Amish were definitely NOT complying with OSHA which requires something a good deal safer than holding on to a string that wouldn't stop anyone from falling at all. They were just trying to look as if they complying - I thought they were nutsThe Hen wrote:Death rates from the lack of OH & S legislation and regulations in the past was considerably higher.

I've said it before, I have enormous respect for the Amish. Although this particular group appears to be a more extreme splinter.

Re: Religion vs smoke alarms
speaking of smoke alarms...I know, off topic. Yesterday we had another incident of a spider setting off the alarm. For some reason, as the alarm is blowing out ear drums, the little spider just runs madly around the perimeter of the plastic covering until I get the mind numbing screaching (not from the spider of course) stopped. It seemed pretty insistent about hanging around and was relocated elsewhere. I haven't a clue why the spider reacted that way to the alarm. Possibly vibration, sound waves? It is loud enough to make anyone run in circles I guess.
This is the second occurrence so I Googled, "spiders setting off smoke detectors". The first result was from Answers.Yahoo and was amused by (Jun 11, 2008)
Top answer: "...it's not really the spiders per se, but those little joints they like to roll and smoke at night".

What goes clip-clop, clip-clop *BANG* clip-clop, clip-clop?
Why is it that when Miley Cyrus gets naked and licks a hammer it's 'art' and 'edgy' but when I do it I'm 'drunk' and 'banned from the hardware store'?

People who are wrong are just as sure they're right as people who are right. The only difference is, they're wrong.
