I understand where she's coming from...

But I just don't want to come from there...

I think we're going to have to reach the "agree to disagree" point here....

How are they significantly different? Both are ending a life that for whatever reason has become emotionally painful or inconvenient. Not wanting to go forward with a baby's life is not really much different than not wanting to go forward with mine

You can choose to believe that a blob of tissue the size of a Lima bean is a baby if you wish but most rational people do not. And the church did not until recently. Before the 1800s life only started at "quickening"; generally ca 24 weeks or at the end of the 2nd trimester.

Well, it's 72 degrees here in my backyard, in The City That Used TO Know How, But Did Too Many Drugs In The Sixties And Forgot....

Unseasonably warm here for this time of year, but Lady Kelly and myself, and The Warrior Princess, and The Lad, (and our Chihuahua hounds) are going to head down to the beach to hang out and relax a bit....

And then when we get home I'm going to throw some burgers on the grill...(I wasn't able to anticipate this weather to the point that I could do some serious marinating)

I know I should probably feel guilty and think about death, but for this afternoon and this evening, I think I'm just going to take a pass on that, and enjoy the weather.... :ok

Today was 91 here, although this evening it's cooled off to a delightful 83. Pretty much about what we'd expect this time of year.

Not sure where the implication comes in that you should feel guilt.....

Oh, don't worry; in your case I wouldn't think of interfering...
I love you too.

1. If you want to end your life, end your life, just don't ask me to help, or to pass laws that require a process or a standard, because *that's* where it gets complicated and fraught with other issues that I can't find a good way through. There is too much subjectivity in assisted suicide laws, too much room for interpretation that language can't fix, too much opportunity for outside influence.

2. I feel incredibly sorry for this woman, who had so little self-worth and self-value that she couldn't see all that she could contribute to the world, and especially to her family. I know we often hold on too hard to people, but that doesn't mean we should hold on too lightly, as a reaction. There is a lot of free-floating criticism about ageism, and lack of respect for our elders. A situation like this doesn't help that at all. If the elders don't value themselves, why should any one else?

3. If you're worried about what happens in the future, you can control some of it with a well-drafted medical power of attorney/advanced directive. The document forms are available on-line for free to almost anyone, and its important to have those discussions with your family, physicians, caretakers. Make sure you designate someone you trust, and be crystal clear in your intentions. It may not cover every eventuality, but it helps both you and your family. Knowing my father's wishes made the decision to end life support easier (its never easy) by giving my sister and I comfort that we were honoring his own intentions. Having to make immediate life/death decisions about my mother was similarly also not easy, but was also helped by having had a previous explicit discussion with her about her wishes.

Guin--I understand your reluctance to pass laws, but it is those laws that are important unless we are just to maintain the status quo. Certainly, some will die for the "wrong reasons" but right now, a number live and suffer unbearably for the wrong reason. I'm with @W, we wouldn't do this to our pets, but we do it to those we claim to love. The whole system is topsy turvy.

Personally, I do think we should appreciate and enjoy life while we can; and it will make it far easier to choose to go gently into that good night. If you choose to rage and cling to every last drop of "life" whatever form it is in, then do so. But I do not think anyone should deny those who choose the other path an easy and painless death.

Oh really? I've known people who've spent thousands in frantic efforts to keep a pet alive even when it's obviously suffering (usually a dog and it's usually a woman who does it) instead of doing the humane thing. "I just can't live without Tiddles".

Interesting that you, of all people, would seize on the topic of pets. Probably not in your best interest.

You are a cruel and vindictive person to all appearances. I expect that is not who you are in real life.

Pretty sure she's a cunt in real life, too. Andrew D nailed it when he called her out years ago and made her leave the board. Too bad she came back.

You can call me crazy all you like, americuntwoman, but you proved yourself to be totally full of shit with all the ignorant incorrect statements about the current state of research & treatment of psychopathy, and you repeatedly show yourself to be obsessively 'crazy' with your delusions regarding posters stalking you, etc.

And don't forget that the PMs still exist in which you confessed to me that you stalked Chicken Steve with the phone call and posted about editec's divorce to humiliate him, so I think it's becoming pretty clear to anyone with half a brain that you're the one with more than a few screws loose. :loon
