I'll grant that my personal example is only one, very unfortunately, of many thousands. AndrewD is only one of many experts, who back up my position.
You can find more case studies online, since in the US and many Western countries, persons convicted of sex crimes are required by the 1994 Megan's Law, to register as 'sex offenders'. That is: A National Sex Offender Registry, not a pedophile registry. While the sites provide much information up to and including the exact penal codes the individuals were charged with, you won't find the term 'pedophile' used anywhere.

The total absence of responsibility for her own actions, her inability to accept and admit when she fucks up (constantly,) and her desperate posting of repulsive views in order to get attention, is now the hallmark of her posting here.

I suppose I'll be called a "control freak" for this, (though she will never explain what she means by this,) and her inane "cha" posting of shit to get herself noticed will continue unabated. Just another example of the way in which she involves herself with people, then HAS to destroy that relationship, as she will not get help for her personality problems. I know damn well that I am not alone in encouraging her to get help for her issues, I know damn well I am not alone in being told she will not get help, but will drift from friendship to friendship as she destroys the previous one.

I do claim, however, to pay attention to the meanings of words, which includes their structural formation.

It is a fact that the "phile" in "pedophile" refers to the attraction. It is a fact that "pederast" does not include "phile" for precisely that reason.

Why is this even controversial?

Pedophilia is a sexual attraction to prepubescent children. (And for diagnostic purposes, that attraction must have some real-world outcome.)

It is possible for someone to have sex with a prepubescent child and still not have a sexual attraction to prepubescent children.

I have nothing against raccoons. In general, they are, to me, just more of the wildlife which is a good thing to have around. (And believe me, we have plenty of it around. Which is a happy thing.)

But these two particular raccoons have taken to scaring our cat off of her food, taking that food, and growling at us when we try to drive them off. Sorry, little fuckers. I was OK with your coming around when I wasn't out and about. I was even OK with your taking Ms. L's food when she wasn't there eating it anyway. I'm an easygoing kind of guy.

But now you have taken not merely to invading our territory, but to claiming it as your own. Guess what: It's not happening. My back patio is mine, not yours. If you want to share it with me when I am not around and you are not bothering me, no big deal. But try to take it from me? Now you can find out why we are the dominant species, and you are not.

Does that make me a hater of raccoons? Of course not.

Same goes for sex with children.

Of course many people who have sex with children -- and, again, I carry no brief for them -- are pedophiles: They have sex with children because they are sexually attracted to children.

But there are times when people have sex wth children despite not being sexually attracted to children. And those people are not pedophiles. They are child-rapists, and my level of sympathy with them is, in general, zero.

Before you get all worked up about that, what I mean is that some people are just organically screwed up. And if someone has sex with children because her or his internal wiring is a fucked up mess, then, yes, I have some sympathy for that person. No one, as far as I know, asked to be born with internal wiring that is a fucked up mess. And in my experience, which is considerable, everyone born with internal wiring that is a fucked up mess wishes -- wishes more fervently than most of us have ever wished for anything -- that that were not the case. They pray. They beg. They consider suicide. And all too often they go beyond considering it. They live tortured lives which most of us could not stand. How can they not deserve our sympathy?

That is, of course, not an excuse for the things that they do. There is no excuse. But sometimes -- and I emphasize sometimes -- there are explanations. Maybe those explanations are insufficient. Maybe not. But if we are going to consider ourselves thinking, sentient beings, we should give those explanations serious thought.

Still and all, words are words. They have meanings. And those meanings are how we connect with each other.

And "pedophile" still does not mean "person who has sex with childrenm regardless of that person's motivation". "Pedophile" still means "person who is sexually attracted to prepubescent children".

Yep, that's what I said by colloquialism, but that doesn't make it a diagnostic, nor legal term to persecute sex offenders by. That would be a violation of civil rights.
Which is why any mention of 'pedophilia' is omitted from the Sex Offender Registries.
