So I take it that is a no for the USA, Keld.

Why people have to constantly read more into my words than is there is beyond me?

Here, does this addition to my post help those of you who think I am trying to laud that Australia is better than all other countries?

Australia is a very racist country in many ways, BUT we only use the team call of "Australia" for when we are playing teams from other countries.

Is that simple enough for you all?
Bah!

That's the way it generally happens with the chant "USA" as well Hen...

It is is not the general practice here for that chant to be used when one domestic team defeats another domestic team....

What seems to have happened here is that a group of youths, (probably thinking they were being funny; teenage senses of humor being what they are) decided to use the chant towards another team of American players...

My interpretation of what you posted (which may be entirely mistaken) led me to think that you did not believe it was possible for Australian teens to behave in a similar manner, and think it would be funny to use the chant "Australia" towards another Australian team.

Oh Australian teens can be complete racist cunts.

They will be despicably racially horrible, should they be so inclined, to youths from ethnic minorities.

Hell, the Lebanese-Australian teenagers will be despicably horrible to those teens from a British-Australian background. The Indian-Australian teens and the Pakistani-Australia teens will continue their mother country issues and the Thai-Australian and Malaysia-australian teens will stand to one stand and distrust everybody. There is much racism that I wish didn't exist but it does.

I am also not saying that racism here is confined is to the teens. Of course it isn't. It is learnt from families.

But when it comes specifically to sport, the chant of "Australia" I have only ever heard it invoked when playing againt another country.

I would have thought that mainly to be the case everywhere which is why the actions in the OP struck me as racist.

Why the fuck would you call out your country's name when you are playing a team from the same country.
There are only two options and only one of them is plausible:

1. The winning team wanted to say that "we are all one after all is said and done".

2. The winning team wanted to say "we are U.S.A. and you are not".

It was obviously an explicitly racist act.

Does the fact that there is no such race as "The USA" mean that is invalid?

rac·ism

noun
1.
a belief or doctrine that inherent differences among the various human races determine cultural or individual achievement, usually involving the idea that one's own race is superior and has the right to rule others.
2.
a policy, system of government, etc., based upon or fostering such a doctrine; discrimination.
3.
hatred or intolerance of another race or other races.
So you have to be a member of a race to be racist?

If movies and TV have taught me nothing else, they've taught me that the USA chant is by no means reserved for sporting events. In fact, it seems to be used in any context where an American feels that the USA is to be lauded.

I wonder what kind of headlines this would have made had the opposing fans also joined in with the chant?
Why is it that when Miley Cyrus gets naked and licks a hammer it's 'art' and 'edgy' but when I do it I'm 'drunk' and 'banned from the hardware store'?

Laudatory ones, I suspect...

Another classy move would have been if the opposing team and fans had responded by standing up and singing The Star Spangled Banner...

It should be branded as an act of ignorant xenophobism instead.

I am sure that on THAT point we will all agree.

What's so ignorant about being scared by her?

Gob/Hen: I may have not explained properly. That was exactly the point I was making - IF (IF) victorious Australian (white) kids chanted "Oztrilia, Oztrilia" toward defeated Australian (aboriginal) kids, it would not be difficult to see that as racialism. Whether they would or would not do it is neither here nor there.

As to Liberty, words almost (but not quite) fail me. What rubato posted about two options is accurate, it seems to me.

Meade, it still wouldn't work mate.

Aboriginals are seen as indigenous Austrlains, it would be like a group of white US kids chanting "USA!!USA!!" at a group of native Americans.

A better analogy may be a group of white Aussies chanting "Oztrilia, Oztrilia"[sic] toward a defeated team of wogs. Although as the wogs are likely to have been here for several generations, that's not quite right either.

No duh! THAT was the point. Aside from rejecting silly terms such as "native" Americans when any born-in-the-USA citizen is a native American (parochial but no-one likes to say USian because it's dumb), yer actual hispanic folks is as "native American" as anyone else. Had the opposing team been made up of immigrants from Siberia who made it down through what is now Canada thousands and thousands of years ago, and the opposition chanted "USA USA" it would be exactly the same.

Australian white kids indeed are unlikely to chant the name of their country as a way of taunting other Australians. But if (IF) they did, it would be easy to recognize it for what it was - racialism.

Xenophobia? I don't like that since a phobia is probably an unreasoning fear of..... the so-called xenophobic attacks here in SA are not unreasoning at all. Illegal immigrants do take up government resources, jobs - and they are hated by some poor sections for that perceived diversion away from "native" ha ha South Africans who ARE willing to take those resources and jobs. (It's not like USians arguing about Mexican fruit-pickers).

Well anyway, I suppose we all agree that the kids chanting USA USA to a bunch of "other" Americans because they happen not to be white is some form of boorish behaviour
