SA Times cites Daily Telegraph:
Women drivers ‘bring flood of licentiousness’
SAUDI Arabia is considering proposals to allow women to drive, a member of the king’s advisory council said. The recommendations from the Shura Council to change the law would apply only to women over 30, who must be off the road by 8pm — and cannot wear make-up while driving. They must wear “conservative dress”.
Such a move would represent a major victory for activists after years of the absolute monarchy rejecting any review of the ban and punishing women caught driving. Earlier this year a woman reportedly received 150 lashes for driving.
The kingdom is the only country in the world that forbids women from driving. Muslim clerics claim “licentiousness” will spread if women are allowed to drive.

Yes, well American men should not act too smug about this topic considering that women in this country could not vote until 1920. Of interest, black, free men had the vote from the get go, and freed male slaves were allowed to vote since 1870 (yes Jim Crow nonsense aside). It is rather disturbing to me that implied misogyny, that men who were formerly slaves had that right before those who bore the children did. The implications are huge. We have come a long way baby, but there is one hell of a long haul ahead.

What my sister said, exactly.
On the long way to go front. There are now 100 women sitting in Congress, which is still less than 20% of the congressional population and still a long long way from being representative of the total population.

Ha! I'm currently in my second term as an elected official in my town. And I'd love to run for Congress but can't stop working to do it (plus a whole long list of other sad excuses). Maybe some day.

Hey, there's an easy way to eliminate most women drivers: require everyone to take their road test in a vehicle with a standard shift, manual steering, manual brakes, and no rear visibility. Then require them to parallel park!

I learned to drive on a stick shift and have had my share of manual transmissions over the years. When my husband and I are out on a drive with him being the driver, and the car needs to be parallel parked I trade sides with him and do the parking. (He has an issue of depth perception that makes it very difficult.) I can even parallel park on an incline with a stick shift as needed.
I realize that you intend this as humor, so ha ha, however it is just indicative of the pervasive institutional misogyny rampant in this country and the world.

I am guessing that I could with proper instruction and practice. Men think they have the corner on certain markets and it is pretty ball busting when the realization comes that in essence we do not need you to marshal on. We could preserve your sperm, kill you off and continue the species. You cannot continue the species without living, female specimens. Who is really the stronger gender?
Well, except for spiders, but then I can deal with those with a Dyson if I absolutely must.

I learned on 67 plymouth belvedere wagon, power nothing with drum brakes all around, manual shift, 225 slant 6. I parked that with one shot on my first try.
It finally died at 300,000+ miles.

Drove a standard for years, taught my entire sorority to do the same, and I'm an excellent parallel park-er - years of city living give you that skill, it has nothing to do with gender.
These days, inability to drive and park are not gender related, but keep on telling yourself that if it makes you feel better.

I am an
horrendous parallel parker; Kelly has a super power for it...
Even if I'm driving if we find ourselves having to squish into to some tiny curb side parking space, (which is frequently all that's available in many part of this burg) I'll get out of the car and let her do it...
Saves us about 20 minutes that way...

Drove a std from the beginning and haven't owned anything else in >35 years. I'm out of practice with parallel parking but used to be able to back a tractor and trailer into a space with 3in on each side of the tractor wheels, ( Oliver and Massey-Ferguson tractors).
