Well, it looks like science and technology are making inroads at eroding the God myth. I don't know one young adult in my daughter's circle of friends that believe in a supreme deity, the concept of hell, or the bible as a guide to ultimate salvation. Not surprisingly, they are all great kids, hard working, caring, and supportive and tolerant of their fellow man in every way. Doing good works because they know it's right, not because some invisible hand will smite them down and condemn them to eternal damnation if they do not. A brave, new, world is upon us and I welcome the revolution of change that's upon us.

There's that old flagellating Roman upbringing rearing its false head. I don't know one young adult in my circle of Christian friends who even remotely believes that either. It is, after all, a total distortion of Christianity.

The sooner we rid the world of religion the better.
The is little that brings about divisiveness and subjugation of women as does religion.

I've always been curious about what caused the divisiveness of women. I have long thought that it was men, not religion.

It is men, but with organized religion it is usually (almost always, really) the men who write the rules.

@W--I understand your point, and there is great evil done in the name of god (or whatever deity or person is central to religion), but there is also great good done by some--from promotion of charity to trying to seek a better world for all. Not all religious persons are idiotic bigots or sexists, many are people who sincerely try to seek justice and make certain all are treated fairly; people who look out for the forgotten and marginalized of society, running shelters and soup kitchens, visiting the prisons, setting up after school and mentoring programs--usually without any real mention of their religious faith. Indeed, people who promote their beliefs by the way they act, not by hitting people over the head with them. Unfortunately, it is only the idiots that get the press.

As for other religions, I don't think Buddhism really practiced such gender discrimination either. Perhaps someone can comment on Hinduism and other eastern religions.

OK I'm not meaning to be picky. Seriously. I do not believe that Christianity functions in that way.

What I see is that particular Christian denominations can and do function in that way. Perhaps "churches" is a finer sieve than "religion" or even "denomination", come to think of it.

It might be more profitable for me to ask how you see of what "their place" consists, in the context of various organizations that claim obedience to Jesus.

I have a Hindu coworker, female. Just few years ago she was so crushed due to being prevented from attending her father's cremation. Females are considered too delicate to watch the body consumed by flame.

I don't think it's true that people overall are becoming less religious or less superstitious. They may be drifting away from the old established brands but for the most part they are replacing them with new self-delusions. And they resent you nonetheless for telling them that they are deluded when they believe that GMOs are evil than they do when they claim that prayer cures cancer or stops people from smoking.

But you're right in the general thesis that people are not becoming less "religious" - they have only shifted to other beliefs which, in their case as in yours, are self delusional.
