Parents Sing 'Jesus Loves Me' to Silence Lone Transgender Supporter at School Board Meeting
The Horry County Board of Education was faced with a recent Virginia ruling that states a transgender boy can sue his school district for violating Title IX. The Virginia school will not allow him to use the boys' restroom.
One lone parent stood up to the hundreds in the room asking why trans students don't deserve the same rights as all the other students. Melanie Moore "argued that transgender people should not be lumped into the same category as pedophiles, rapists or other criminals. She also tried to explain how transgender students are born one sex, but feel as though they should have been born the opposite gender – though she was shouted over by many members of the crowd," The State reports.
“Everybody is concerned about their children. The transgender parents are concerned about their children too, so I thought it was important that somebody stand up for them,” Moore said.
After more than six minutes of defending her position, Moore was silenced when parents broke out into song to drown her out. "Jesus love me, yes I know, for the Bible tells me so," a popular Christian hymn, they chose to end discussion.

Using a hymn to drown out discussion. They probably would have done the same thing to Jesus when he stopped the stoning of the adulteress. After all, a questioning mind is Satan's mind.

I'm new at this, I could hurt myself if I went all out like that.

Re: Taking the Lord's name in vain
I don't think anybody should be singing/chanting/shouting anyone else down at a public meeting simply to prevent them from speaking their piece. To sing a children's song about Jesus is despicable.
For Christianity, by identifying truth with faith, must teach-and, properly understood, does teach-that any interference with the truth is immoral. A Christian with faith has nothing to fear from the facts
Re: Taking the Lord's name in vain
Puts me in mind of the public servant ,who wouldnt issue the marriage license to the gay couple .I always assumed God was big enough to fight His own battles ,I cant see were Jesus would want that many vigilantes .acting on poor interpretations of scripture and meaning .(Its about love people ! When we separate ourselves on account of prejudice ,I just cant find the Love of God in that behaviour ).
Re: Taking the Lord's name in vain
I referenced that childhood hymn regarding the evil bitch harping on the food stamps recipient, but was being facetious. Now this?!?! Many Christians are not nice people, it seems.
For me, it is far better to grasp the Universe as it really is than to persist in delusion, however satisfying and reassuring.

Many Christians are not very good Christians. Especially they seem to have omitted Matthew 25:31-46 from their Bibles - which is a pity, given the inevitability of vs. 46.

Re: Taking the Lord's name in vain
I think many who call themselves Christians often ignore, or outright reject, many of the teachings of Jesus.

Re: Taking the Lord's name in vain
I agree, Big RR with the proviso that in my experience it's not so much ignore and reject as it is "being ignorant of". There is no understanding of anything much beyond turn and burn.
In hoo-raw worship-riven churches, teaching of the Bible is so superficial and erroneous beliefs so rarely challenged by the Word, it is hardly surprising that the body remains unedified and unimproved. The same applies to hate-motivated teaching.
Superficiality is not the peculiar province of church congregations (viz. Trump and his supporters) but the results certainly stand out. Most disappointing.

You may be right about ignorance Meade, but I do think some churches (and many who call themselves Christians) focus on the idea of faith based salvation and say their works and deeds don't amount to anything important, so they will do what they want (or they're told to do).

I think works and deeds are more important steps toward whatever salvation is out there.their works and deeds don't amount to anything important
But I also have faith and belief that something beyond myself keeps me sober as long as I ask for it.

Re: Taking the Lord's name in vain
..which goes exactly to my point that the Bible is not being taught in those churches - those are the happy-clappy, mumble in the Spirit type places. Although you raise an interesting question. In the Roman church which has traditionally not taught the Bible, there is a tremendous concentration on words and deeds.Big RR wrote:You may be right about ignorance Meade, but I do think some churches (and many who call themselves Christians) focus on the idea of faith based salvation and say their works and deeds don't amount to anything important, so they will do what they want (or they're told to do).
Salvation by faith alone is a Protestant doctrine which, as you say, is sometimes as far as many congregations go - but again, because they are not taught the Bible which contains absolute injunctions against the simplistic interpretation of that (otherwise exactly true) Sola. As Calvin wrote: It is therefore faith alone which justifies, and yet the faith which justifies is not alone. Luther wrote on Galatians: To think, "If faith justifies without works, let us work nothing," is to despise the grace of God. Idle faith is not justifying faith. In this terse manner Paul presents the whole life of a Christian. Inwardly it consists in faith towards God, outwardly in love towards our fellow-men.
People are pretty good on knowing that the Great Commission is something to do with baptising and going out into the world to lay the word on the heathen - but they only get to that partial understanding by skipping Jesus' primary instruction to teach the requirement to follow ALL his commands. To teach one must know - and ALL his commands are those in which these ignorant people are totally ungrounded, just as they know nothing of Calvin and Luther (let alone Hobbes).
For Christianity, by identifying truth with faith, must teach-and, properly understood, does teach-that any interference with the truth is immoral. A Christian with faith has nothing to fear from the facts
Re: Taking the Lord's name in vain
Meade--if I recall correctly from my studies of Calvinism (many years ago when I was confirmed in a Dutch reformed church), Calvin also described salvation (actually justification) meaning that we and our works are accepted by god, showing the need to live ones faith and follow the teachings of jesus; justification and sanctification exist only together.
by the way, as I recall Hobbes was a pretty good baseball player--the best there every was.

Calvinball anyone?
Other kids' games are all such a bore!
They've gotta have rules and they gotta keep score!
Calvinball is better by far!
It's never the same! It's always bizarre!
You don't need a team or a referee!
You know that it's great, 'cause it's named after me!
Re: Taking the Lord's name in vain
We cannot reject the book of James (which I am told that Martin Luther-called " an Epistle of straw "by your works you declare your faith,I have to admit I uphold James in this teaching.
We should stop putting so much emphasis on perdition and hopefully try to encourage people to be real christians ,to have a little honest compassion and love for our fellow man rather then being a good person just to escape punishment .

Absolutely; but somehow doing good for its own sake has never really had a broad appeal.

Re: Taking the Lord's name in vain
I have always been a contrarian in almost all aspects of life. Perhaps that is why I find Martin Luther very persuasive in his Letter to Pope Leo X, 6 September 1520, but the letter of James is my favorite book in the New Testament; from the front part of the bible, my favorite is Job.
