Ain't that the truth. I had twelve years of RC/ElHi education ('55-'67) and not once did we discuss the Douay–Rheims Bible in religion period, nor any other time for that matter. My religion was ingrained by a combination of the finely manipulated catechism, and approved bible stories and parables -- I NEVER once owned, nor touched, a DRB.
While walking to grade school one morning I found on the sidewalk a compact and condensed 2"x 3" booklet of the KJV -- something that might be passed out by a "lesser" christian on a mission. As I was checking it out in class, my teacher -- a draconian figure dressed head-to-toe in black -- skulked up from behind and smacked the book out of my hands with her pointer. It was followed by my left ear being whacked with the same weapon.
I was detained after class and had to explain why I was reading such heresy in front of the crucifix (wrapped with a piece of palm leaf) hanging above the blackboard. Merely saying I was curious was not what the nun wanted to hear. She threatened a meeting with the principal and my parents. Eventually I apologized for my transgression and all was forgiven, but never forgotten. I remained a bold, brazen article for the remainder of the sixth grade.
This incident, along with a broad range of other odd religious contradictions, confirmed my migration away from the baptismal font. By the time I graduated from eighth grade I found myself free from bondage. Hallelujah! God was not (my) answer -- no regret, no remorse. My choice is not for everyone but I know I have lived a fuller life due to it.
My personal religion? Live, and let live.
